Astoria Energy LLC , a complex consisting of two 500 megawatt combined cycle power plants located in Astoria, NY.

NOTE: This position is only open to candidates in the IUOE Local 30 Apprentice program.

General Summary

The Apprentice will work with Operations & Maintenance (O&M) /Auxiliary Operators in the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of a combined cycle power generation facility utilizing GE 7FA combustion turbines.

Primary Functions

  • Perform general plant maintenance activities
  • Perform warehousing activities including stocking, shipping, and receiving activities
  • Perform all duties in a safe manner and participate in site safety meetings
  • Implement safe working practices, identify hazards, and take corrective actions as approved by others
  • As directed and following demonstration of required competencies, perform operations and maintenance of plant equipment
  • Read and record gauges and meters as directed
  • Participate in plant safety and environmental training programs
  • Operate industrial equipment such as man lift and forklift
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Work in a group or team environment
  • Read, understand, and comply with all regulatory procedures and facility safety programs. Follow all plant environmental permits
  • Occasionally work overtime and irregular hours as needed to support reliable operation of the facility. From time to time the working hours will be determined on short notice based on plant requirements.
  • Perform general housekeeping, grounds keeping, snow removal, and continuous improvement of the appearance of the facility including painting projects as required
  • Maintain the cleanliness of all areas of the plant and Control Room, or other duties as assigned

Working Relationships

This position works under the direction of the Operations and/or Maintenance Manager or designees.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include the possibility of standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g. hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Outside working conditions may require exposure to both cold and hot weather conditions for extended periods. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.

Fitness for Duty

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening.

Work Schedule

This position offers a regular scheduled Monday to Friday work week, with an 6:00 AM - 2:00 PM, day shift. Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with the possibility of weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required.

Compensation

The starting rate per the current CBA is $18.00 with a 5% increase every 6 months.

  • Candidates should have the ability to work towards qualifying for the OMT position
  • Must possess initiative, self-motivation and integrity
  • Must be cooperative with peers, supervisors, and plant visitors
  • Must be able to receive and execute instructions with accuracy
  • Must be able to learn the skills needed to use typical industry tools, test equipment, and calibration equipment
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and basic understanding of electricity and mathematics
  • Must be able to respond calmly and think clearly in emergency situations
  • Must be able to visually read and respond to computer-generated data, instrumentation, gauges, readouts and variations in color
  • Must have manual dexterity required to operate keyboards, push buttons, dials, valves and mechanical-actuating devices

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

NOTE: This position is only open to candidates in the IUOE Local 30 Apprentice program.

  • High school graduate or GED
  • Experience in industrial facilities such as power generation or process plants preferred
  • Valid driver's license required
