This Position reports to:

R&D Team Lead

Key responsibilities

In this role, you will have the opportunity to contribute significantly to successful project results in technology and firmware development for Industry 4.0 solutions, extending our product line of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC). You will design and develop firmware architectures, ranging from bare-metal development on MCU level to RTOS-context, while maintaining close alignment with product management, hardware development, engineering tool developers, and the factory. Each day, you will act as the first point of contact in Research and Development for specific product-related issues and maintenance, showcasing your expertise by identifying, proposing, and implementing innovative solutions.

This role is contributing to the ABB Motion business area in Germany. Main stakeholders are product management, hardware development team, engineering tool developers, and factory teams.

You will be mainly accountable for:

  • Designing & implementing firmware architectures for Industry 4.0 PLC solutions, full stack.
  • Programming systems in the automation and real-time domain, ranging from bare-metal development on MCU level to RTOS-context (Linux with PREEMPT_RT in multicore context, kernel, and userspace).
  • Maintaining recognized expertise in embedded system development and integrating the latest developments in technologies, tools, and methodologies into your work.
  • Tight alignment with product management, hardware development teams, and other stakeholders.
  • Documenting work results to ensure maintainability and continuous improvement.
  • Responsibility for (and future lead of) firmware development projects.
  • Understanding and initiating IP (intellectual Property) generation and participating in the project IP strategy development.

Qualifications for the role

  • You are highly skilled in firmware development for embedded systems and experienced in working with MCUs and ARM-based multicore Linux systems.
  • You have 5+ years of experience in embedded system development, preferably within the context of industrial automation or related technologies.
  • Proficiency in C is mandatory, with additional knowledge of Python and Bash scripting being advantageous
  • Experience with industrial bus architectures like Profibus, CAN, PROFINET, EtherCAT is advantageous
  • You are passionate about structured development processes, ranging from requirement analysis, design, and implementation to testing and documentation.
  • Degree in applied computer science, electrical engineering, or a comparable program with profound on-the-job experience in embedded system development.
  • You are fluent in English and have sufficient German language skills to actively participate in discussions and collaborate with team members.
