About the Department

The Section of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/Stem Cell Transplantation provides care for patients and families with acute and chronic medical conditions, or other hematologic diseases, requiring the specialty knowledge and skills of Hematology, Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation.

Job Summary

This primary inpatient Advanced Practice Provider position administers the day-to-day clinical and research operations for the Pediatric Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation and Pediatric Hematology/Oncology program. This position is responsible for the comprehensive management of patients undergoing stem cell transplant and other hematologic/oncologic conditions on the inpatient unit.

Develops, validates and implements sophisticated algorithms for clinical processes in the transplant program and more broadly in the Section of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology & Stem Cell Transplantation. Coordinates transplant research protocol development and implementation. Writes policy and procedure on stem cell transplantation and other related clinical processes for the Section of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology & Stem Cell Transplantation. Resolves patient problems or refers patients to appropriate resources. Works with the Clinical Care Coordinator to ensure that patient visits and procedures are pre-authorized.

Responsibilities

• Takes histories, performs physical examinations, formulates a differential diagnosis and plan for selected patients seen by the inpatient Stem Cell Transplant and Hematology/Oncology teams.
• Daily rounding.
• Performs infusion of stem cells, bone marrow aspirate/biopsy/harvest and lumbar puncture with or without chemotherapy.
• Follows-up on all pertinent laboratory and imaging studies.
• Maintains effective communication with subspecialists and the inpatient team.
• Provides ongoing education to patients and families regarding transplant, complications, and side effects, including discharge teaching.
• Triage patient calls, formulates a plan of care and documents in EPIC.
• Communicates with the outpatient team and primary care provider upon discharge.
• Provides care as outlined in section’s policy and procedures while maintaining appropriate documentation for the National Marrow Donor Program and the Federation for Accreditation of Cellular Therapies (FACT).
• Writes and obtains treatment consent and applies BEACON plan.
• Coordinates pre, peri, and post- transplant care for patients undergoing an autologous or allogeneic transplant in collaboration with nurse navigator.
• Coordinates post-discharge plan with nurse navigator.
• Coordinates matched unrelated and cord blood searches through the National Marrow Donor program.
• Complies with standards and regulations of licensure, regulatory, and accrediting agencies.
• Assumes responsibility for maintaining own competency and continuing education in area of specialization and in professional practice.
• Attends relevant workshops, conferences, and seminars locally and nationally.
• Assists in evaluating the quality of patient care through application of the quality assurance process.
• Participates in independent and/or collaborative research projects in stem cell transplant.
• Evaluates goals and outcomes taking into account the benefit-versus-burden, safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness for the patient, family and the organization.
• Develops diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions needed to achieve the goals and outcomes of the patient’s plan of care.
• Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree from an accredited school/college.

Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through a combination of education and a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in a related job discipline.

Certifications:

Current and/or eligible for State of Illinois licensure/registration required. Eligibility to be privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO). - State of Illinois

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

• Advanced nursing degree from an accredited school/college of nursing or completion of an accredited Physician Assistant educational program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc.

Experience:

• Demonstrated clinical competency.
• Background in research.
• Research nurse experience or transplant coordinator experience.
• Minimum 1 year of inpatient experience in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Stem cell transplant.
• Critical care nursing experience.

Licenses and Certifications for Advanced Practice Nurse:

• Current RN Illinois License and obtain an advanced practice nurse (APN) license by start date.
• National certification as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner.
• Once licensed, apply for a mid-level practitioner-controlled license and DEA number.
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support- PALS.
• Basic Life Support- BLS.

Licenses and Certifications for Physician Assistant:

• Current Physician Assistant license/registration in the State of Illinois or receive by start date.
• Certification from the National Commission for the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) by start date.
• Once licensed, apply for a mid-level practitioner-controlled license and DEA number.
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support- PALS.
• Basic Life Support- BLS.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:

• Knowledge of electronic medical records.
• Conduct physical examinations and health assessments.
• Interview and obtain medical information.
