Job Description

This position is responsible for executing excellence in sample processing and comminution techniques in a high-volume, fast-paced commercial lab. Sample preparation is the first stage of the sample life cycle and it is crucial that all steps, including processing, aliquoting, labeling, and storage, are completed correctly to ensure the accuracy of lab testing. The role also supports critical operations in the Fiber Lab, utilizing basic laboratory skills, paying close attention to detail, and working effectively as part of a team. The Fiber Lab is a complex environment that simulates human digestion to analyze food samples through numerous lab methods to determine fiber content.

Responsibilities

  • Follow preparation techniques for processing samples for lab testing, including the use of grinding mills and other comminution techniques such as blenders and liquid nitrogen.
  • Ensure accurate labeling of sample cups with assigned unique identifiers.
  • Record sample preparation techniques and delivery details into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) software.
  • Maintain organization structure of samples by accurately delivering and disposing of samples as necessary.
  • Follow all lab safety and quality requirements and procedures, including PPE, GMP, OSHA, and ISO standards.
  • Organize workload and prioritize samples to maximize output and meet deadlines.
  • Execute food testing methods and perform routine instrument maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Provide cross-functional support as business needs dictate.
  • Handle multiple tasks, projects, and priorities with minimal guidance or direction.
  • Facilitate analytical testing, including Enzyme Digestion, LECO, Ash Analysis, Protein Analysis, and HPLC analysis.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in a lab setting or AS in science-related field.
  • AS or BS degree in science-related field; AS degree can be substituted for 2 years’ experience.
  • 3-6 months of industry lab experience or internship experience with knowledge of sample preparation and analytical instruments including HPLC or Protein Analyzers.

Work Environment

Work full-time at 37.5-40 hours per week, alternating shifts between 7-3 and 9-5 at the James Ford Bell Location. The position requires wearing PPE such as face shields, hearing protection, steel-toed shoes, OSHA-approved safety glasses, laboratory coat, and cryogenic gloves. Core summer hours from Memorial Day to Labor Day offer shorter Fridays and longer days Monday through Thursday, dependent on lab group. The role is based in the JFB technical center in Golden Valley, where you will work as part of a large team in the lab prep area, supporting sample handling and distribution for food sample testing. Holiday pay is included for the six major holidays.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $23.00/hr.
