Project Kuiper is an initiative to launch a constellation of Low Earth Orbit satellites that will provide low-latency, high-speed broadband connectivity to unserved and underserved communities around the world. Kuiper Government Solutions (KGS) within Project Kuiper is developing secure, high-performance satellite communications technologies that support U.S. National and International security and defense.

KGS Software organization architects, designs, develops, delivers, and operates software for KGS products and services that span across Space and Ground segments of the Kuiper system. The team is responsible for embedded software running on KGS developed RF, Optical, and Networking device endpoints connected to the Kuiper system, and services software running on AWS cloud.

Key job responsibilities

We are looking for an exceptional technical leader to join us as a Principal Software Development Engineer, leading the software architecture, design, implementation and integration of KGS developed device endpoints. These devices enable Government customer required RF, Optical and Network layer connectivity with Kuiper system, and integrate with Kuiper ground solutions, network solutions, KGS business and operational support systems.

This role is responsible for designing, building out, and maintaining foundational software that extends Kuiper capabilities to US Government customers such as NASA, DoD, other National Security customers, and International Government customers. You will develop brand new software services for mission critical space safety and sustainability applications which will automatically coordinate with external systems and organizations rapidly, reliably, and at scale.

You’ll work in a fast-paced, high-impact environment, tackling complex challenges in secure satellite communications. You’ll collaborate closely with hardware, security, systems, and product teams to develop scalable, real-time solutions tailored for Government customers.

This role is based in Redmond, WA, El Segundo, CA, or Northridge, CA, with U.S. relocation benefits available. Due to the sensitive nature of the KGS projects, onsite work is required five days a week.

This position requires that the candidate selected be a U.S. Citizen in order to comply with U.S. government-imposed requirements related to the nature of the work and/or where it will be performed.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelors/Masters/PhD degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or related field

10+ years of embedded and/or cloud services software development experience

Proven expertise in mission-critical systems development, specifically communication systems

Working knowledge of object-oriented design, data structures, and algorithms

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Hands-on embedded software debugging and troubleshooting skills

Experience designing and building large-scale systems in a multi-tiered, distributed environment (Service Oriented Architecture)

Knowledge in integrating third party business and operational support systems

Knowledge in wireless communications protocols and/or system architecture and design

Experience in Defense, Aerospace, Satellite or Telecom industries, developing products and solutions for Government customers

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $180,100/year in our lowest geographic market up to $311,200/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
