Job Description

The Advanced Placement Teacher Investment Program (AP-TIP) includes multiple levels of curricular and instructional support for teachers of pre-college coursework (e.g. AP, Dual Credit). The Science Content Specialist 1) collaborates with the broader AP-TIP team to further shared program goals and 2) supports and improves the practice of science teachers within the program framework. Subjects addressed typically include biology, chemistry, environmental science, and physics. The Science Content Specialist reports to the AP-TIP Academic Director.

Responsibilities include:

  • Contributing to the growth and excellence of the AP-TIP mission and outcomes ● Supporting AP science and other pre-college coursework program efforts with schools and teachers
  • Collaborating with colleagues within and without the University of Notre Dame to advance the program’s mission

RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Unless otherwise noted, “AP-TIP” encompasses cohort, affiliate, and partner initiatives, as well as the Advanced Placement Excellence in Catholic Schools (APECS) program extension.

I. Contributing to the growth and excellence of the AP-TIP mission and outcomes (30%)

A. Contribute to AP-TIP’s vision and growth—guided by AP-TIP’s strategic plan—with particular attention to the science content area.

B. Collaborate with the Academic Director and other AP-TIP team members to ensure consistency of objectives, goals, and implementation within and across content areas.

C. Advance the AP-TIP framework and goals through data-driven decision-making based on recorded evidence from teachers, students, and schools.

D. Communicate proactively with various stakeholders and serve as the primary line of communication with AP-TIP science teachers.

E. Continue to grow in subject area expertise by participating in relevant local, regional, state, or national gatherings.

F. Other duties, as assigned by the Academic Director.

II. Supporting AP Science and other pre-college coursework program efforts with teachers and schools (60%)

A. Provide AP-TIP science teachers with instructional support, including a formal coaching cycle (both in-person and virtual as outlined).

B. Develop and coordinate disciplinary iterations of program events coherent with program frameworks and objectives.

1. Set topics, identify and onboard presenters, and oversee presenter

agendas. Gather ideas/feedback from Support Specialists, as applicable (see “D” below).

2. The Science Content Specialist may facilitate, conduct, and/or present at disciplinary iterations of program events, if needed.

C. Conduct professional learning communities for APECS teachers.

D. If applicable, collaborate with Science Support Specialists (part-time program staff) who act as a content-specific resource for sub-disciplines.

E. As applicable, present teachers with leadership opportunities (which may include leadership of AP-TIP or College Board events).

F. As applicable, visit schools to build relationships and address pedagogy, curricular issues, and/or program logistics.

G. In consultation with the Academic Director, undertake special projects in support of the AP-TIP framework and mission.

III. Collaborating with colleagues within and without the University of Notre Dame to advance the program’s mission (10%)

A. Develop intellectual capital and relationships with colleagues in support of the AP-TIP program.

B. Participate in the University of Notre Dame Institute for Educational Initiatives and the Center for STEM Education.

WORK LOCATION:

The Science Content Specialist is a hybrid position. The “hybrid” work designation includes the following expectations:

I. Usually at least 2 days of in-office work with up to 3 out-of-office work days per week:

A. One day will be spent as an in-office, on-campus day for all program faculty and staff. The second day will be spent either in schools, attending a conference, facilitating AP-TIP events away from campus, or as another on-campus day.

1. School visits, conference attendance, and the facilitation of in-person AP-TIP events at locations away from campus will be counted as in-office time.

II. Given the travel undertaken in the position, the following guidelines for mileage reimbursement will be observed:

A. Mileage will be reimbursed for travel to and from school visits, conferences, and AP-TIP events at locations away from campus.

B. Mileage will not be reimbursed for travel to and from the office (on campus).

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant content area, education, or related field
  • Min. 5 years classroom experience
  • Experience teaching at least one AP science course in relevant content area
  • Demonstrated success as an instructor of AP course(s) in relevant content area
  • Demonstrated ability to work on multiple projects, to work with multiple clients, and to prioritize
  • Ability to drive to various school locations or program event venues across Indiana

Preferred:

  • Advanced degree in relevant content area, education, or related field ● 5+ years classroom experience
  • Experience teaching Dual Credit course(s) in content area
  • Experience as an instructional coach or other leader of teacher professional development
