The Temporary Auxiliary Plant Operator (APO) is a developmental role supporting progression to Control Room Operator or Production Technician roles. This seasonal position, not to exceed 180 days per the union Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), reports to the Senior Operations Supervisor and takes direction from the control room to ensure safe and efficient plant operations. The APO also supports maintenance of plant equipment as needed, within the scope outlined below. The Linden Generating Station is a 1300 MW Dual Fuel Combined Cycle Plant located in Linden, NJ.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine inspections and adjustments of assigned equipment to maintain optimal operating conditions.
  • Maintain accurate plant logs per station and fleet procedures.
  • Verify equipment line-ups for all plant systems.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, including oiling, greasing, and filter cleaning/replacement.
  • Execute general plant cleanup tasks.
  • Assist with bulk fuel oil deliveries, DM truck receiving, and chemical product unloading per procedures.
  • Report and address abnormal conditions promptly, following established protocols.
  • Operate plant equipment, including pick-up trucks, plow trucks, forklifts, aerial lifts, and scissor lifts.
  • Use basic hand and power tools as qualified.
  • Support plant maintenance in a helper role.
  • Assist with storeroom tasks (receipting, issuing, inventory) under direct supervision.
  • Participate in On-the-Job Training (OJT), computer-based, and classroom training to build power plant operations knowledge.
  • Assist with lockout/tagout procedures under direction.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Ability to follow simple instructions and complete routine tasks.
  • Aptitude for operations, technical, or mechanical work.
  • Strong observation skills and ability to communicate effectively via telephone/radio.
  • Legible handwriting and successful completion of pre-employment tests.

Physical Requirements

  • Working in varied outdoor environments such as all-weather conditions, all noise levels, hazardous conditions, and on the full range of outdoor work surfaces.
  • The frequent use of protective equipment (i.e., hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves, and high voltage protective equipment, etc.) may be required. Work with hazardous materials may also be required.
  • Working in proximity to high voltages and current with proper training and equipment, operating heavy equipment and rolling stock and entering confined spaces or hazardous environments may be required while often being exposed to equipment and machinery noises.
  • Duties require walking, standing for extended periods of time, crawling, stooping, sitting, climbing vertical and inclined ladders and stairs, operation of large valves and other tasks requiring up to 50 lbs. of pulling or turning force, and lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs.
  • Exposure to extreme heat and cold.
  • Eye and hand coordination are required to operate switches, pushbuttons, and other controls.
  • Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust and focus.
  • All candidates will participate in the post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.
