Job Summary:
This Business Development Associate will assist in the growth of Bechtel’s market share in the Northeast by pursuing professional services projects for public clients in the transportation sector. The Business Development Associate will be responsible for the pursuit of new business opportunities, including prospect and customer analysis, budget tracking, competitor assessment, win plan execution, and proposal preparation.
This position is designated as part-time telework per our global telework policy and will require at least three days of in-person attendance per week at the assigned office or project. Weekly in-person schedules will be determined by the individual and their supervisor, in consultation with functional or project leadership.
Major Responsibilities:
- Manages business development pipeline of work in the Northeast and maintains database for prospective projects
- Builds and maintains strong relationships with key clients, stakeholder organizations, and industry personnel
- Performs market research on industry trends, customer insights, political and regulatory developments, industry associations, and competitor activities
- Keeps informed on clients’ present and future projects and programmatic and technical requirements
- Prepares and conducts presentations to educate clients on the value of Bechtel’s services and how Bechtel can help meet the clients’ requirements and expectations
- For a specific prospect, performs necessary research on customer and competition, develops alternate bid strategies, recommends teaming arrangements, develops and implements win plan recommendations, and prepares and manages proposal budgets
- Performs various calculations of a moderately complex nature to help analyze the financial background and profitability of targeted prospects
- Supervises the preparation and coordination of technical and price proposals in close collaboration with the proposals team
- Develops relationships with prospective teaming partners, including performing outreach to DBEs, MBEs, WBEs, and SBEs
- Tracks expenditures against budgets for prospects and urban center office costs
- Supports the preparation of corporate approval documents related to business development
- Represents Bechtel at industry events to increase Bechtel’s industry profile and promote its capabilities
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Requires bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 8-10 years of relevant experience or 12-14 years of relevant work experience.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Excellent oral and written communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills and a customer-based approach
- General knowledge of the principles and techniques of developing business and sales including pre-positioning, targeting, and prospect pursuit
- Experience in the transportation sector and knowledge of current industry trends
- Ability to sell Bechtel’s value proposition, execution approach and commercial positions to customers through knowledge and authenticity
- Experience in revenue and budget planning and reporting
- Demonstrated initiative and intensity in pursuit of new work
- Self-directed, requires limited daily supervision or guidance
- Proven ability to work effectively in fluid environments
- Ability to influence internally without direct authority with strong covenant-based behavior
- Works well with teams and other departments
- Excellent MS Office skills
- Responsive to internal and external customers with consistent follow-up and follow-through
- Knowledge of company capabilities and services available to customers (if already working for Bechtel)
- Working knowledge of company policies related to the formulation and approval process for contracts and proposals (if already working for Bechtel)
Preferred:
- 3+ years’ experience in Rail, Transit, and/or Aviation
- Experience and established relationships with public clients in the Tri-State area
- Business development experience in the professional services or construction industry
- Knowledge of procurement processes and requirements related to public infrastructure projects
- Knowledge in preparation of win plans, pre-positioning, targeting, pursuits, and capture of strategic prospects
