OpsTech IT Wireless Engineering owns delivering software-defined, automated, and incrementally scalable Wireless network infrastructure products that improve the reliability of our wireless services for Amazon’s fulfillment centers and transportation sites, worldwide. As part of this work Engineers are responsible for iterating on the existing design and/or creating new wireless designs that better meet customer needs. These wireless solutions are used by hundreds of thousands of associates, relied upon by operators of industry-leading fulfillment and transportation systems, and play a critical role in the delivery of shipments to Amazon retail customers.

The Wireless Network Development Engineer will leverage in-depth knowledge of Wireless networking engineering and operational practices to develop the organizational technical strategy used to ensure improved availability one of the largest wireless networks globally. The candidate will partner with Software, Operations, and Engineering teams, to define, build, and automate the future solutions which will enable faster, scalable management, globally. You will Identify themes and areas of improvement and deliver the software and design changes needed to affect change, through collaboration by partnering with peer teams, coaching less tenured engineers to deliver on your behalf, or executing on your own.

The right candidate will have demonstrated experience leading large projects and have an expert level technical background in current networking technologies. You must be able to thrive and succeed in an entrepreneurial environment, and not be hindered by ambiguity or competing priorities. This means you are not only able to develop and drive high-level strategic initiatives, but can also roll up your sleeves, dig in and get the job done. As a NDE, you will anticipate bottlenecks, influence external vendors and internal team roadmaps, provide escalation management, anticipate and make tradeoffs, and balance the business needs versus technical constraints.

As a NDE, you will be expected to:

• Write code for our most demanding, cross-functional networking projects.
• Functionally decompose complex problems into simple, straight-forward solutions.
• Fully and completely understand system inter-dependencies and limitations.
• Effectively research and benchmark Amazon technology against other competing systems in the industry.
• Contribute intellectual property through patents.
• Assist in the career development of others, actively mentoring individuals and the community on advanced technical issues and helping managers guide the career growth of their team members.

Key job responsibilities

• Identifying, developing, and delivering technical solutions that improve the availability of our wireless network technologies.
• Partner with peer teams to collectively understand the customer problems and find technological solutions utilizing wireless networking technologies.
• Define and meter the availability of our existing and future network solutions, ensuring they meet or exceed the needs of our customers.
• Identify and deliver solutions that reduce operational impact to customers and enable them with scalable, resilient, and cost optimized services.
• Dive Deep on complex problems that identify root causes of our customer impacts, developing and delivering corrective actions.
• Support new technology introduction, lab testing, proof of concept (PoC), run books definition, and pilot deployment.
• Automate infrastructure testing, deployment, operations, and life cycle management
• Be a part of Global organization that provides 24x7 escalation service on shift rotation basis. Some night and weekend coverage may be required.
• Develop automation to resolve wireless network failures
• Investigate challenging problems to identify root cause and make recommendations for improving the customers experience on Wifi.
• Create and update the wireless network design to improve reliability
• Mitigate and Solve Network Availability Risks
• Participate in an on call rotation
• Implement metrics to measure wireless availability and identify performance risks

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

• 4+ years of major internet routing protocols experience
• 4+ years of working in a Linux/Unix environment experience
• 4+ years of working with Cisco and/or Juniper network gear
• 1+ year experience in Cisco/MIST wireless and related technology Wireless LAN Controllers (WLC), Wireless Access Points (WAP)
• 2+ years of automation scripting using Python, Ansible experience

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• 1+ years of automation scripting using Python, Bash, Shell and/or Perl experience
• Knowledge of all 802.11 (a,b,g,n,ac,ax), 802.1x (EAP/PEAP), TACACS+, IPSK, and radio frequency communication principals.
• Expert knowledge with Site Survey tools
• Hands on experience on Ekahau. Significant field experience working with Cisco wireless solutions such as Catalyst 9800 IOS-XE, and Cisco/Mist series APs.
• Knowledge Wireless Network working with Cisco/Mist Wireless networks at scale
• Understanding of wired networks, routers, switches, firewalls etc.
• Proven ability with wireless optimizations, including AP placement, achieving ideal signal levels, optimized roaming (802.11r), spectrum selection, channel tuning, cell optimization, QoS, and more
• Strong leadership and project management abilities
• License/Certification: CWNA/CCNP Wireless/CCIE Wireless
• Knowledge of network administration, routing/switching and engineering in mission critical environments servicing large server deployments

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $127,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $212,800/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
