Summary:

Reporting to the Senior Interpreting Administrator, the Staff Interpreter (Certified Hearing Interpreter) supports the Gallaudet Interpreting Service (GIS) in providing communication access services for students, staff, faculty, alumni, and visitors for both Gallaudet University and the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center.

Job Description:

Interpreting Skills and Language Proficiency Expectations

  • Provides professional and accurate interpreting services to the Gallaudet community and a wide variety of settings as assigned.
  • Prepares for each assignment by reviewing scheduled assignments ahead of time, reviewing all materials available for each assignment, seeking out additional prep to support well rounded content knowledge, meeting with presenters, faculty, and event coordinators to review content, discuss logistics, and determine appropriate interpreting needs for each environment, including co-interpreting needs.
  • Regularly and consistently develops breadth and depth of interpreting competency (i.e. ASL and spoken English), engages in ongoing self-assessment of skill and works with supervisor to identify and determine areas of focus and skill growth; and collaborates with GIS scheduling office to request assignments that provide continued growth opportunities, and incorporates goals as part of yearly performance evaluation process.

Professional and Behavioral Expectations

  • Adheres to the RID/NAD Code of Professional Conduct at all times by maintaining the strictest level of confidentiality for all interpreting assignments, demonstrating respect for consumers and colleagues, and abiding by all other tenets of the CPC.
  • Adheres to Gallaudet University code of conduct as outlined in the University Administration & Operations Manual; and conducts self appropriately in all interpersonal communications.
  • Supports equity, diversity and inclusion within GIS and Gallaudet University by attending EDI training when offered and participating fully in GIS social justice and equity initiatives.
  • Maintains and submits all required employment-related documentation in a timely manner by reading and responding, as needed, to all emails from both the University and GIS, and completing conflict of interest, internet security, and annual compliance training within the given deadlines.
  • Meets regularly with direct supervisor to review performance and activities, including but not limited to progress on performance and professional goals, consumer feedback and evaluations, operations and scheduling input according to established practices within the department, and opportunities for enhancing services within GIS and the University community.

Leadership Activities

  • Provides regular and ongoing consultation to Gallaudet departments and stakeholders on scheduling interpreting services and works with interpreters according to established practices within the division.
  • Coordinates interpreting services for high profile requests, large meetings, conferences and other events as needed by collaborating with the Scheduling Manager and scheduling team on interpreter assignments, gathering and distributing prep materials to interpreting team, serving as point of contact for requesters and onsite event personnel, and gathering feedback from consumers and event organizers to share with interpreting team, scheduling team, and leadership team as appropriate.
  • Contributes to the effective operations of GIS by serving as GIS department liaison or GIS event coordinator, as outlined above.
  • Contributes to the effective operations of GIS by serving on at least one departmental committee.
  • When departmental partnership and resources permit, contributes to the continued development of the interpreting field by participating in all mentoring, mentor training and professional development opportunities; and by engaging in reciprocal mentoring and skill development with colleagues.
  • Engages in development and application of readily-applicable short and long-range solutions to current issues facing the interpreting field, such as Deaf leadership in the field, recruitment of historically underrepresented groups for staff and freelance positions, mentor training and skill development, and addressing unconscious bias, audism, racism, ableism, etc. in the field.

  • Establishes and maintains a positive and supportive working relationship with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Demonstrates a genuine commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace and participates in activities and workshops to foster continuous learning.
  • Serves as a mandatory reporter under Title IX; and commits to completing Title IX training and other compliance requirements on an annual basis.
  • Prioritizes safety in the workplace as a collective responsibility for the well-being of employees and fosters a culture of safety that is integral to our success, including strict adherence to safety procedures and protocols, as well as promptly reporting any safety hazards or incidents.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma and/or GED .
  • A minimum of four years of professional interpreting experience.
  • National certification (e.g., NIC, CI&CT, NAD IV or V, CSC).
  • Ability to communicate in American Sign Language.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Experience working in a higher education setting.

Additional Job Details:

  • The incumbent must be able to work a non-traditional shift on as-needed basis.
  • Candidates must submit a transcript if a Bachelor's degree is in process.
  • Candidates are expected submit a portfolio of professional interpreting experience including a description of experience in various interpreting settings, mentorship/practicum supervision experience, workshops/trainings/professional presentations/classes delivered and attended, a list of any published works, and a list of any other contributions made to the field of interpreting.
  • The incumbent without a Bachelor's degree is required to obtain a Bachelor’s degree within five years of employment (failure to meet the requirement may result in termination of employment).
  • “Pass” rating on GIS interpreting skills screening is required before hire date.
