Directs and coordinates the activities of workers engaged in operating a variety of welding and related equipment to fabricate pipe and pipe assemblies such as laying out, fitting, and welding fabricated pipe and related components such as flanges, elbows and ports; setting up and welding together metal components of products such as pipe, flanges, extensions and plates; manually welds and repairs defect in welded pipe with electric are-welding equipment; completing pipe finishing work including grinding, cutting, poly/epoxy/cement repairs, etc.
- In conjunction with department review work orders create schedules that meet both internal and external needs.
- Computes amounts of stock and supplies required for operations, based on production schedules, and requisitions materials from purchasing department.
- Interprets specifications, blueprints, and job orders to workers, and assigns duties.
- Inspects pipe from mills to determine extent and type of repair that is needed. Redirects or moves pipe to appropriate repair rack or staging area.
- Interfaces with supervisors and managers to ensure customer deadlines are met.
- Inspects and measures parts and products to verify conformance to specifications.
- Directs workers in adjusting pipe and welding equipment to repair products which fail to meet standards.
- Establishes or adjusts work procedures to meet production schedules.
- Develops, recommends, and implements measures to improve production methods, equipment performance, and quality of product.
- Suggests changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of shop, department, or work crew.
- Analyzes and resolves work problems or assists workers in solving work problems.
- Maintains time and production records.
- Supervises fabrication yard erection activities (fit up, welding and lifting).
- Supervises fabrication yard installation operations (piping installation, E.I.T.).
- Co-ordinates and interfaces between fabrication/installation and pre-fabrication activities.
- Co-ordinates sub-contractors involved in the assembly stages.
- Ensures compliance with safety procedures and quality standards.
- Searches for the most efficient technical solutions.
- Provides quantitative data for producing the progress reports.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Associates degree and 6 years of welding/steel fab experience and 2 years of fitting experience or High School Diploma and 8 years of welding/steel fab experience and 2 years of fitting experience. Two years of prior team leader or supervisory experience. Current welder certification or ability to obtain such within 60 days.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before managers or groups of employees. Ability to read, understand and interpret plant drawings.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute ratio and percent and to interpret bar graphs.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Basic Computer skills required, including MS Office Suite (Excel, Word), email. JD Edwards experience preferred.
- Ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal English.
- Ability to train and instruct lesser experienced fitters and welders when required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to communicate in Spanish.
KEY PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit or stand; use their hands, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and climb or balance. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include both close and distant vision, color visions and ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. The employee is occasionally exposed to extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
