[What the role is]
The Climate & Weather Research Programme Office (CWRPO), set up under the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS), National Environment Agency (NEA), plays a crucial role in strengthening Singapore's resilience to climate change and extreme weather events. CWRPO drives efforts to strengthen local research weather and climate science capabilities in Singapore through NRF-funded Research, Innovation & Enterprise (RIE) research grants, aligning scientific research efforts with national priorities to inform policy decisions.
Ongoing research programmes include the $6.5M National Sea Level Programme (NSLP) and $23.5M Climate Impact Science Research (CISR) Programme. Key priority areas include climate change impacts on sea level rise, water resources and flood management, biodiversity and food security; human health and energy; and translation of climate science to policy. A new $25mil RIE2025 Weather Science Research Programme (WSRP) was launched to enhance Singapore's ability to understand and predict our tropical urban weather, including extreme weather arising from climate change.
