Position Summary

MSU Denver is seeking a Network Wireless Engineer with minimum experience and background in managing wireless network equipment, which include installing, configuring, and maintaining wireless settings. Reporting to the Network Manager, the Network Wireless Engineer will leverage technical expertise, customer service, and strong organizational skills to support network operations for students, administrative staff, and faculty. The position will require some knowledge about Wi-Fi standards and best practices.

As a network engineer, you will work within the network organization and be required to have an understanding, and some hands-on experience with components of the networking environment, such as LANs/WAN, network security, and network switches. You will provide assistance in the support of the University's wired network, Domain Name Servers (DNS), and IP management. The incumbent will work with more experienced network engineers on the team to help maintain and troubleshoot network and wireless issues. The position must be able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Responsibilities

  • 60% - Serves as the system administrator of the University's wireless networking systems. Installs, configures, manages, and tests network communications between equipment such as servers, routers, switches, wireless access points, and the Internet. Develops wireless network broadcast (SSID) policies, procedures and processes to ensure reliable and continuous services. Designs the Wireless mapping for new installs/buildings. Continuously monitors and adjusts wireless SSIDs and components to ensure optimal performance.
  • 20% - Constantly reviews the buildings' heat maps for signal strength and coverage and modifies as needed for best wireless performance. Diagnoses network-related problems, often involving contact with end users, to identify symptoms. Isolates faults to a particular Local Area Network (LAN) and/or cabling system/set of components. Identifies any defective equipment (fiber, copper, or hardware), and/or utilizes network test equipment such as a protocol analyzer to isolate the fault. Engages in repair effort or will suggest course of action as appropriate.
  • 10% - Assists with the network management and monitoring systems (DNS, Aerohive, Meraki, Solarwinds, InfoBlox, NetMRI) which support the networking functions for MSU Denver's computing environments. These tools provided round the clock monitoring and automated paging to MSU Denver IT network support staff. Likewise, they continuously monitor for suspected security violations and facilitate inventory control and operating system upgrades. Supports our university's Avigilon camera management.
  • 5% - Implements and manages network cabling, such as Category 6 and 6a wire, 50um multimode and 9um fiber optics in support of student computing laboratories, patch panels, networking/phone closets and to faculty and staff workstations. This includes the installation of the cable attachment of connectors, and using test equipment to certify the work needs industry standards.
  • 5% - Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Bachelor’s Degree in a field of study related to the work assignment. Two years of experience equals one year of education
  • Two years' experience providing wired and wireless network support in an enterprise environment
  • Two years' experience supporting network protocols such as TCP/IP, 802.1q and 802.11ac/n
  • Two years' experience administering network monitoring tools such as Solarwinds and Infoblox NetMRI
  • Two years' experience utilizing critical wireless tools such as Ekahua, 7Signal, Meraki Dashboard and Hivemanager
  • Two years' experience with Meraki product like (specifically Meraki dashboard, MX access points and MR switches.)
  • Three years' experience utilizing operating systems such as UNIX, MAC OSX, and Windows

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in a field of study related to the work assignment
  • Two years' experience with the Cisco switches (Cisco Nexus 9300, Cisco 6500s, 3730, 3650, 2960 switches)
  • Two years' experience with the Networking cabling testers (such as Fluke cable analyzer, Fluke NetTool, and Sidekickl)
  • Two years' full-time work experience in university in the support of networking and wireless systems
  • Experience with large scale wireless network projects such as equipment replacement upgrades for entire buildings

  • Ability to safely perform the physical requirements necessary to climb an 8-foot ladder carrying 50 pounds

Schedule Information

  • Full time
  • Exempt
  • Days of Week: Monday - Friday
  • Evenings and Weekend Work: Occasionally for maintenance
  • Schedule: Hybrid with required days in the office each week. The first few weeks will be in-person, on site.
  • Travel: Occasional local travel within the metro area to the COLO. Occasional long-distance travel to industry conferences.

Salary for Announcement

Under Colorado law, MSU Denver is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account a variety of factors including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The anticipated hiring salary that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $64,500 - $75,500.

This position is paid monthly and is eligible for MSU Denver benefits.
