Routine duties include data entry and management, the basic laboratory prep and clean-up, insect sorting, and field sampling on various projects throughout southern New Hampshire and into the White Mountains. Specialized skills we would like to train specific to our sample processing needs will include proficiency in aseptic technique, DNA extraction, PCR analysis, and fungal culturing. Fieldwork requires the ability to be outdoors for 6+ hours, lift and carry 25+ lbs. short distances, and a willingness to occasionally put up with ticks, mosquitoes, and warm conditions

Duties/Responsibilities

Field sampling and data collection (35%)

  • Fieldwork assistance consists of travel to various sites in southern New Hampshire and the White Mountains for tick monitoring, soil arthropod sampling, beech leaf disease assessment and experimental implementation, among other duties.

Routine laboratory assistance (35%)

  • Routine laboratory assistance consists of training and then independent use of autoclaves for glassware, tools, and biological sample sterilization, training and then independent use of acid dishwashers to clean dishware, data entry of, chemical solution preparation. Additionally, insect sorting and fungal culturing may be required.

Molecular extraction and amplification (30%)

  • Applicant will be trained in aseptic technique to extract and purify fungal, insect, and nematode DNA, trained in PCR amplification of extracted DNA, and sample submission prep to the Hubbard Genome Center for sequencing.

Requirements

Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience:

  • Must have at minimum, a high school degree and be 18+ years of age.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Those with experience and aptitude in field ecological sampling techniques and familiarity with temperate forest ecosystems will be preferred.
