Job Title: Controls Engineer

Job Description

As a Controls Engineer, you will provide direction for controls equipment locations with consideration for safety, maintenance, and production from tool installation through launch. You will assist in defining Factory Information System (FIS) assets at the PLC level and support coordination between tooling suppliers and plant floor systems suppliers for FIS, ILVS, IBSS, among others. Your role includes supporting the integration of plant facilities supplied equipment such as energy supplies and operator lift tables, while ensuring adherence to safety standards.

Responsibilities

  • Perform debug and tool buy-off controls functions to support maintenance and production, including fault diagnostics, manual screen functions, robot control screens, and all panel view functions at the plant.
  • Validate the implementation of controls task updates and provide support to resolve controls issues and concerns.
  • Provide feedback and lessons learned to the controls standard group to ensure cross-commodity tooling consistency.
  • Mentor tooling suppliers to provide safe, consistent, reliable, and maintainable tooling.
  • Verify adherence to common programming practices and support the standard group in the controls design/build checklists for each tool prior to scheduled buy-offs.
  • Conduct PLC/robot safety risk assessments and sign EL10 documents.
  • Review, track, and help resolve controls issues during the launch phase.
  • Assist in the development of a robust prove-out and test plan for any new interfaces.
  • Coordinate controls open-issue meetings during the launch phase and support FIS and throughput meetings and issues.

Essential Skills

  • Proficient in PLC programming and controls engineering.
  • Detailed working knowledge of robots, especially Kawasaki and Fanuc Robots.
  • Experience with the development and launch of new controls, processes, and facilities in weld, robotics automation, body shop, and body construction.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • In-depth knowledge and experience in controls architectures.
  • Willingness to travel both domestically and internationally up to 70%.
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Above-average communication, leadership, and computer skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, AutoCAD 2000, and Rockwell Software Suite.
  • Experience with Ethernet, DeviceNet, Profinet, Profibus, and Ethernet/IP networking.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work with minimal supervision.

Work Environment

The position is based out of Dearborn but requires travel to different assembly plants throughout the US, Canada, and Mexico as needed. Typical travel spans 11-13 days at a time, followed by a long weekend at home. You will be part of a team of five controls engineers supporting Body Constructions specifically. Flexibility for domestic and international travel is required, with up to 70% travel expected. The role demands willingness to work overtime, weekends, and holidays to ensure project completion.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $38.87 - $42.88/hr.
