Position Information

The San Antonio District is looking for talented Engineer Technicians to join the District’s Central Design Section. Engineer Technicians will work on a variety of projects in the twelve-county area of the district. Annual Salary Ranges

Transportation Engineer Tech I (A13) - $35,439- $52,388

Transportation Engineer Tech II (A15) - $38,976- $58,045

Transportation Engineer Tech III (A17) - $42,976- $64,469

This position is for multiple Transportation Engineer Tech I, II or III. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on the applicant's work experience, education, skill level and all other appropriate factors, and based on business needs.

Position Description

Performs advanced drafting and calculations and intermediate design work; performs field work; uses automated systems and learns specialized procedures. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer or registered architect who has final approval authority for projects. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

Transportation Engineer Tech I

  • Assists in preparation of roadway design, traffic control, lighting, signal, equipment and building plans.
  • Performs basic drafting and calculations in support of design activities; copies detailed plans and drawings.
  • Prepares field notes.
  • Files and makes copies.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Transportation Engineer Tech II

In addition to the duties listed above

  • Assists in on-the-job training of less experienced technicians.
  • Performs basic design work.
  • Performs intermediate drafting and calculations in support of design activities; accomplishes non-routine and complex assignments.

Transportation Engineer Tech III

In addition to the duties listed above

  • Learns additional automated design methods or specialized design procedures in areas including bridge/culvert detailing, traffic management, geometric design, signal/lighting design, retaining walls and building design.
  • Performs advanced drafting and calculations in support of design activities; develops graphic presentations that include distinctive design features.
  • Reviews entire sets of plans for format, drafting and calculation errors and correlation of plans and specifications.
  • Attends specialized design schools.
  • Does some record-keeping.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience:

Transportation Engineer Tech I: None Required

Transportation Engineer Tech II: 3 years drafting, design, plan preparation.

Transportation Engineer Tech III: 4 years drafting, design, plan preparation.

(Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related College education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Transportation Engineer Tech I

  • Higher mathematics

  • Follow verbal and written instructions

Transportation Engineer Tech II

In addition to the competencies listed above

  • Intermediate design and hand and computer-aided drafting procedures
  • Basic roadway design
  • Applicable engineering workstations and applications to support efficient planning and design activities
  • Training in a classroom, office, or field environment
  • Performing intermediate drafting

Transportation Engineer Tech III

In addition to the competencies listed above

  • Advanced and specialized design/drafting procedures
  • Performing advanced drafting
  • Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
  • Fingering-picking, pinching, typing; working primarily with fingers rather than whole hand
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
  • Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and fingers
