Salary Range:

Traffic Systems Technician I (A15): $48,000 - $58,045 /annually

Position Description

Performs entry-level work activities related to the installation, repair, troubleshooting and maintenance of traffic systems, communication, illumination and/or data collection devices/systems. Work may be performed in heavy traffic and may require extensive statewide travel. Work may require contact with governmental and private entities. Employees at this level perform assignments following specific instructions and are subject to frequent review by the immediate supervisor.

Essential Duties:

  • Assists in inspecting construction methods, workmanship and maintenance procedures to ensure contractors build, install and maintain traffic-related systems/equipment in accordance with plans and specifications and contract requirements.
  • Assists in maintaining stock and equipment to ensure necessary tools, products and materials are available for scheduled projects.
  • Assists in monitoring and maintaining clear work zones and cleans construction site at job completion.
  • Assists in operating, maintaining and servicing equipment such as bucket trucks, drilling and pole setting rigs, concrete saws, trenching machines, cable locating instruments, insulation testers and/or 18-wheel calibration truck.
  • Assists in responding to complaints and identifying problems regarding traffic signal timing/traffic congestion and assists in developing recommendations for long-term solutions.
  • Follows applicable safety procedures when working in an area where other utilities such as high voltage lines, gas lines, water and sewage lines and heavy traffic are located.
  • Moves/assists in the placement of barricades, cones and other traffic control devices.
  • Responds to emergency situations to assist with repair and maintenance of traffic signals, systems, lighting or traffic data collection equipment.
  • Sets forms and pours and finishes concrete bases for traffic control devices and traffic data collection equipment; as required moves bags of cement, signal heads/poles and equipment.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience: NONE

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Must have a valid US Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

  • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes
  • Using, maintaining and repairing of tools and equipment of the trade
  • Safely using, operating, and maintaining applicable equipment
  • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others
  • Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade
  • Using applicable electronic test equipment
  • Follow verbal and written instructions
  • Work with electricity up to 600 volts
  • Move up to 50 pounds (See essential duties for example of items to be moved.
  • Follow applicable safety standards, practices and procedures

  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Climbing - ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc.
  • Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
  • Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
  • Pulling-using upper extremities to exert force moving objects in a sustained motion
  • Lifting-raising objects from lower to higher position/horizontally to a different position
  • Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
  • Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
  • Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment
  • Visual Acuity-determine work quality/make general observations of facilities/structures
