About the Role:

The Wastewater Process Analyst I will be responsible for monitoring and optimizing one or more processes at the treatment plant under the guidance of supervisory or senior staff. Example processes include liquids treatment, solids treatment, odor control, gas handling, and Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) treatment. The Wastewater Process Analyst will also support capital project review/implementation, energy and chemical conservation initiatives, and the completion of regulatory tasks and reports. The Wastewater Process Analyst will become an expert on the plant’s various regulatory documents (e.g., Municipal Wastewater, Puget Sound Nutrient, CSO Consent Decree, and air permits) and help convey the requirements to plant leadership, operators, and maintenance workers.

About the Team:

The Wastewater Treatment Division (WTD) protects water quality and public health in the central Puget Sound region by providing high quality and effective treatment to wastewater collected from our local sewer agencies. WTD serves about 2 million people within a 424-square-mile service area, which includes most urban areas of King County and parts of south Snohomish County and northeast Pierce County.

Job Duties

What You Will Be Doing:

  • Monitor and optimize wastewater treatment unit processes (liquids, solids/biosolids, air emissions, energy recovery, reclaimed water, etc.) and overall plant operations to ensure regulatory compliance and to optimize final product quality (effluent, biosolids, air emissions) and operation (cost-effectiveness).
  • Assist in troubleshooting unit processes and associated equipment operation, monitoring systems and controls.
  • Conduct research and evaluation of special studies and projects to optimize plant processes to ensure maximum performance and cost-effective operation as determined by the supervisor or senior staff.
  • Make basic projections of chemical and energy use in plant processes and general plant operations for current and future conditions.
  • Prepare and/or review technical reports, project proposals and progress reports as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

Qualifications You Bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a scientific field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, in a physical science, engineering field, and/or wastewater, ranging from certificate programs through doctorate degrees and postgraduate work.
  • Skill in written communication techniques and principles, to be measured through a detailed review of submitted materials (e.g., cover letter and resume). The cover letter should outline how the candidate’s work experience is applicable to this job posting.
  • Computer proficiency, as measured through familiarity with and use of general software (Microsoft suite applications such as Teams, Outlook, and Excel) and/or through familiarity with and use of industry specific software (e.g., Lab Information Management Systems, Distributed Control Systems, Water Information Systems, and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems).
  • Work experience in wastewater, including but not limited to coursework and laboratory assignments, internships at treatment plants or an industrial manufacturer, and professional working experience at a treatment plant or wastewater consulting firm.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Possession of a Washington State Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Group I certificate (or ability to achieve the Group I within 18 months of hire).

Working Conditions:

  • Work Location: West Point Treatment Plant - 1400 Discovery Park Blvd, Seattle, WA 98199
  • Work Schedule: This full-time position works a 40-hour work week. This position is covered under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is overtime eligible.
  • Union Representation: This position is represented by Local SEIU 925 (Wastewater Treatment Division).
