The Language Technologies Institute (LTI) at Carnegie Mellon University is a world-renowned research and education hub at the forefront of natural language processing, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and human-computer interaction. Established within the School of Computer Science, LTI pioneers innovative approaches to understanding, processing, and generating human language in both written and spoken forms.

We are seeking a Research Programmer/Analyst. This position will use large language models (LLM) automatic speech recognition (ASR) and other natural language processing (NLP) techniques to automate the annotation of corpora of linguistic fieldwork, including morphological segmentation and interlinear glosses.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Create novel combinations of LLM, NLP, and ASR to achieve performance that surpasses the state of the art in morphological segmentation and interlinear glossing.
  • Design and conduct suites of experiments for resolving methods and models are most suitable for the task under varying circumstances such as the amount of data available for training.
  • Assist in a human-in-the-loop process of corpus creation for three indigenous languages of Mexico (Mixtec, Totonac, and Nahuatl), resulting in archival-quality linguistic documentation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a related field
  • Graduate training in linguistics and computer science
  • 1-3 years' experience in research in ASR, NLP, and/or LLM's, specifically as an applied to low-resource language
  • Must be experienced and familiar with the scientific method, formulation of hypothesis, design of methodology and execution of experiments.
  • A combination of education and meaningful experience from which comparable knowledge is proven may be considered.

Additional Information

In accordance with the pay transparency legislation set forth by NY the corresponding salary range for this position, if placed in NY ranges between $75,000 and $80,000.
