The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences within the UW School of Medicine is the third largest clinical department within the School of Medicine with 330 full-time faculty members, 460 courtesy faculty members, and over 350 staff. Department faculty provide clinical services in 5 hospitals, 14 primary care locations, and several outpatient sites in addition to telepsychiatry consultations to more than 150 clinics in Washington and beyond. As the only academic psychiatry department serving the five state WWAMI region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, Idaho), the Department’s highly competitive residency training program is largely responsible for developing the mental health workforce in the Pacific Northwest. The Department’s robust research portfolio totals $67 million in grants and contracts per year for projects ranging from clinical neurosciences to treatment development to health policy and population health. The Department is recognized as an international leader in developing, testing, and implementing Collaborative Care, an integrated care model increasingly seen as a solution for population-based mental health care. Other areas of excellence include Addictions, Autism, High Risk Youth, Neurosciences, and Trauma, and the Department is developing innovative new programs in Technology and Mental Health, Global Mental Health, Maternal and Child Mental Health, and Targeted Intervention Development. Psychiatry is the third largest department in the School of Medicine and the largest non-divisioned department. The overall annual operations funding from all sources is over $130 million.

The Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences within the UW School of Medicine currently has an outstanding opportunity for a Temporary Research Study Assistant.

This position is a hybrid, full-time (40 hour/week) temporary (12 month)role. The employee in this position will work closely with the Principal Investigator and colleagues on a study funded by the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. This 5-year study involves conducting a randomized controlled trial of an app offering cognitive-behavioral coping skills for survivors of recent sexual assault experiencing elevated posttraumatic stress and alcohol use. We are currently in year 3 of the study.

Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions:

  • Screen potential participants by phone (involves asking about highly sensitive topics); typical volume is 15-20 phone calls per week.
  • Call enrolled participants to orient them to the study app; typical volume is 5 phone calls per week.
  • Conduct weekly coaching calls to support app use with enrolled participants; typical volume is 5 phone calls per week.
  • Serve as the primary point of study contact for a subset of enrolled participants for the duration of their involvement in the study.
  • Contact participants as needed to address issues; answer participant questions as needed.
  • Respond to participant crises as needed.
  • Arrange clinical follow up for participants (e.g., crisis support).
  • Schedule and reschedule participant calls.
  • Document all participant interactions within 1 business day.
  • Note: Some participant interactions may occur after standard business hours.

  • Communicate effectively and professionally with all participants, study team members, and project partners.
  • Delegate tasks using clear instructions; monitor task completion to ensure accuracy and timeliness; follow up when needed.
  • Troubleshoot and exercise effective judgment to resolve challenges.
  • Seek supervision in a timely fashion whenever appropriate.
  • Complete tasks in a timely and accurate fashion while maintaining participant safety and abiding by all study procedures; independently anticipate and plan for upcoming tasks.
  • Carry out complex tasks based on brief verbal or written instructions.
  • Maintain knowledge of all study procedures and expectations (e.g., from IRB, funder, PI, and others).
  • Proactively identify and resolve instances of conflicting instructions, information, documentation, priorities, and/or project requirements.
  • In an ongoing manner, identify strategies to improve performance based on feedback and self-reflection.
  • Effectively manage competing time demands, prioritize appropriately while maintaining efficiency, and troubleshoot solutions when time management challenges arise.
  • Develop and maintain in-depth knowledge of all study systems related to task assignments; use study systems in a manner consistent with documentation and verbal instructions.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Two years of college-level course work in a relevant academic area AND one year of appropriate experience.

Desirable Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant academic area, OR equivalent education/experience.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • Comfort with phone calls.
  • Ability to flexibly deliver scripts in a natural and conversational tone.
  • High motivation and strong time management; ability to produce quality work in a timely manner; high efficiency with administrative tasks.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and in a team environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong skills in making judgment calls in novel situations without immediate supervisor support; strong skills in critical and “big picture” thinking; ability to place tasks in the broader context of the study and anticipate future tasks given big-picture study needs.
  • Experience conducting phone screenings.
  • Experience managing complex scheduling activities.
  • Experience and interest working with adults in crisis, with trauma or sexual assault exposure, and/or with mental health symptoms.
  • Experience delivering scripted interventions.
