The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) Survey and Lands Engineering (SLE) Division measures and provides geospatial information necessary for the development of design, construction, and maintenance of the New Mexico State Transportation System. SLE supports all surveying and mapping activities required to fulfill the NMDOT¿s obligation to transportation projects in the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP). The Division is comprised of two distinct Sections, the Survey Section and Lands Engineering Section. Each section supports, manages, and delivers various products utilizing state-of-the-art mapping and surveying technology. The Survey Section is supported by the Geodetic Unit, Geospatial Data Unit, and four Survey Field Units. The Lands Engineering Section is supported by the Right of Way and Monumentation Mapping Unit and the Verification and Research Unit.
As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to receive three (3) days of administrative leave upon your start date. This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government.
This position will assist a Survey Field Unit in measuring and collecting spatial data needed to provide controlled mapping for location and right of way surveys for planning, design development, right of way acquisition/monumentation and construction of highway improvement projects.
The duties of this position will include checking and verifying survey data and calculations. Additionally, utilizing maps, plans, survey data, and Geographic Information System (GIS) data in order to search, check, and or perform survey calculations in the field/office to assist in the completion of surveying and mapping activities. This position will also perform field work for various types of surveys. Upon completion, reduces field notes and processes electronic survey data to utilize and prepare project deliverables using Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) software and other computer software as needed. Ensures a controlled survey is established by measuring primary project control with Survey Grade Global Positioning System (GPS) or Conventional surveying equipment.

The ideal candidate will have experience in the following:
High School Diploma or equivalent and two (2) years of relevant experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling two (2) years may substitute for the required experience.

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.
Employment requires successful completion of a pre-employment physical exam and is conditional pending results.
Business Reference check and Driver's License verification are required, and employment is conditional pending results.
May require Technician Training Certification Program (TTCP) certificates within one year of hire to include but not limited to; Nuclear Densometer, Concrete Field and Lab Testing, Aggregate, Soils, Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA), Traffic Control and SWPPP.
Work is performed primarily in the field in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, humidity, wind, rain and snow. May include exposure to: sunlight, dust, pollen, chemicals, rough/rugged terrain, insects and reptiles, noxious plants and infected trash; moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals, high speed/high volume traffic and loud noises, and confined spaces; falls and bruises, considerable physical strain; standing for extended periods of time doing traffic control or walking long distances. Hand dexterity required for some duties; numerous specific vision abilities to include: close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus; some climbing, reaching, kneeling and crawling to perform job duties; ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Work may also be performed in an office setting with exposure to visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage to include working with faxes, copiers and printers. May be required to work irregular hours and is subject to call outs for emergencies. Willingness to accept change of geographical assignments. Interaction with the public by phone and in person. Frequent temporary assignments that require travel and extended overnight stays to include weekends, holidays, and overtime are required.
