The Laboratory Shift Supervisor will function under the direction of the Core Laboratory Manager to coordinate the technical day to day operations, patient satisfaction goals, employee engagement action planning, and all regulatory requirements. This position requires the ability to function in a supervisory role. This position is accountable for quality operations and decision making. Must be able to prioritize work and maintain a professional demeanor under stress.
The Laboratory Shift Supervisor will serve as the subject matter expert in all technical areas of the Laboratory and maintain competency in at least 2 areas of the lab. The Laboratory Shift Supervisor will be involved in evaluating and implementing new technologies. Ensuring method, procedure validation, staff training/competency has taken place prior to implementation. The Laboratory Shift Supervisor will ensure that all maintenance on equipment including all major and minor (microscopes, pipets, etc.) is performed at the recommended frequency. In addition, the Laboratory Shift Supervisor will review monthly maintenance logs, monthly QC and submit for peer review where possible, and perform semi-annual instrument regulatory requirements (instrument comparisons, carry over studies; linearity studies, and auto validation verification) as applicable. Laboratory Shift Supervisor is responsible for resolving technical problems and ensuring that remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance characteristics.
The Laboratory Shift Supervisor will perform staff scheduling duties with other Supervisors to ensure adequate staffing levels at all times and alert the Laboratory Director when issues arise. The Laboratory Shift Supervisor is expected to manage up, across, and down (i.e. seeks from superiors, offers support, systems thinking vs. silo thinking, sets & communicates clear expectations). Promote a fair, safe, and high-quality work environment by holding self and staff accountable for adhering to regulatory and VHS policies, procedures, and standards. Laboratory Shift Supervisor will ensure that laboratory staff’s orientation, training, and competency records are completed at appropriate intervals and maintained as required by the regulatory agency. The Laboratory Shift Supervisor will perform other duties as assigned. These may include LIS training/projects, maintaining adequate supplies, resource for Lean projects, and being part of interdepartmental committees within the hospital.
Education
Associates degree is required.
Bachelor’s degree is preferred.
Program of study must be in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution. Note: Alternative degrees in science and U.S. military laboratory training can be accepted if CLIA alternative education requirements are shown to have been met.
Experience
5 years Clinical Laboratory experience is preferred.
Certification & Licensures
Primary Source Verification is required.
MLT, MT, CLS, or MLS certification (ASCP or equivalent), or State licensure, is required.
West Virginia DHHR Clinical Laboratory Practitioner License, state applicable.
Qualifications
Knowledge in Laboratory sections and operations, including current accreditory standards and regulations required
Demonstrates knowledge/competency in providing service to patients of all ages including neonate, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric required
Demonstrates knowledge/competence in the performance of diagnostic testing applying Det Norske Veritas (DNV) patient safety initiatives and applies these to all aspects of patient care
Ability to consistently pay attention to detail while maintaining quality and productivity required.
Ability to prioritize work and situational professional demands required.
Ability to precept staff required.
Professional demeanor and communication, both verbal and written, when under stress, is required.
Professional and respectful interaction in all situations with patients, physicians and employees required.
