Position Description:

Our research focuses on determining the molecular and cellular mechanisms by which procoagulant platelets and endothelial cells regulate thrombin formation. An understanding of these surface-dependent interactions is critical to our understanding of normal hemostasis and pathologic thrombosis including the unique thrombotic complications seen with non-factor replacement therapies for patients with hemophilia and other bleeding disorders. Our goal is to utilize these findings to improve the care and quality of life for patients with bleeding and clotting disorders through preclinical studies of potential therapeutic agents.

We seek a highly motivated candidate for a laboratory research analyst (LRA1) position to perform cell culture, molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, and animal research using bleeding and thrombosis models. This candidate will work under the supervision of the Principal Investigator in the Division of Hematology. This position currently has funding for 1 year, but may be renewed based on available funding and performance.

Primary Responsibilities

• Perform essential cell culture work on human cells for in vitro and in vivo studies.
• Design and perform molecular assays, including but not limited to DNA/RNA isolation PCR, qPCR, SDS-PAGE gels, western blot, and ELISA.
• Obtain whole blood specimens by venipuncture from properly identified human subjects and provide properly prepared specimens for in vitro studies.
• Perform experiments in mice, including, but not limited to, breeding, handling, anesthesia, non-survival surgeries, intravenous and tail vein injections, weighing, and preparation of tissues for flow cytometry, histology, or RNA/DNA/protein isolation.
• Operate and maintain laboratory equipment required for specific tests.
• Prepare and maintain reagents, buffers, and media for experiments.
• Assist with managing IACUC protocols, lab safety SOPs, and lab ordering.
• Maintain detailed and complete records of all work performed in an organized lab notebook.
• Analyze, evaluate, and interpret data for communication of results to the PI and other lab members in team meetings.
• Must be detail oriented and well organized with strong communications skills and the ability to execute work independently as needed
• Meet with the PI regularly to plan experiments, troubleshoot problems, and discuss results.
• Review journals, abstracts, and scientific literature to obtain information to aid in the design and development of procedures and techniques.
• Help provide a collegial, supportive, and professional working environment
• Perform other related duties as required by the PI.
• Must be a US Citizen, National, or authorized to work in the US.

Education/Training

Work requires a bachelor's degree in botany, biology, zoology, psychology or other directly related scientific field.

Experience

Work requires two years of research experience. A related master's degree may offset required years of experience on a 1:1 basis, e.g., a two-year master's degree in lieu of two years of experience.

Anticipated Pay Range:

Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $50,439.00 to USD $76,417.00. Duke University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position; candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills; internal peer equity; as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
