Summary

The Building Operations Section (BOS) in the Facilities Management Division (FMD), is looking for reliable and dependable candidates to join their Utility Worker team as a Utility Worker II. BOS is looking to fill several different career types, including TLT (term limited)/SDA positions for immediate full time, benefited roles and to create a list of competitive candidates to fill similar vacancies. This list is expected to last up to one year, however the list can be expired at any time.

The Utility Worker team is responsible for a wide variety of maintenance and equipment operation duties not associated with journey-level work in any skilled trade.

Successful candidates will be required to complete pre-hire contingencies, including:

  • A thorough background and criminal history record check through the Department of Adult & Juvenile Detention.
  • Provide a 5-year Washington State Complete Driver's Abstract.
  • Reference checks.
  • Pre-employment physical examination.

Who is Facilities Management Division – Building Operations?

Through a workforce of over 300 dedicated employees, the FMD operates and manages the County's capital assets by developing and maintaining cost-conscious, sustainable, high-quality facilities, and environments. The Building Operations Section of FMD maintains approximately 3 million square feet in facilities where King County provides regional services, including the King County Courthouse and District Courts, Maleng Regional Justice Center, King County Administration Building, King County Animal Shelter, and several Public Health facilities. Our facilities range in age from 8 to 100 years, with equipment such as boilers, chillers, DDC controls, ventilation fans, pumps and compressors, and fire/life/safety systems.

Job Duties

In order to be considered for this exciting opportunity, the successful candidate, at a minimum, will demonstrate skill and ability to:

  • Perform minor maintenance and repairs to facilities, grounds and structures, including periodic preventive maintenance and inspection, and repairs resulting from vandalism and emergencies. Operate power tools including, but not limited to drills, miscellaneous saw types, jackhammer, roto-hammer, chain saws and pressure washers.
  • Assist journey-level trade workers who perform carpentry, plumbing and electrical work. Maintain daily logs and complete work requests on assignments.
  • Assist in construction, and/or remodel of simple County structures. Load and drive various types of trucks including dump and box trucks.
  • Lift, carry, move office furniture and equipment using moving equipment as well as manually.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

WE ARE LOOKING FOR CANDIDATES WHO HAVE:

  • One year of demonstrated work experience performing physical tasks in a capacity related to this position.
  • Predictable and reliable attendance.
  • Knowledge of the basic use and care of tools and equipment. Ability to get along and work effectively with others.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Basic knowledge of building craft and mechanical trades. Knowledge of safety procedures.
  • Skill in using road maps.
  • Ability to take direct orders, work assignment and communicate effectively with the supervisor.

Supplemental Information

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:

  • Candidates must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License and the ability to travel throughout King County in a timely manner.
  • Driving is a regular job function of this position. Candidate's will be required to purchase and provide a five year Washington State Complete Driver's abstract from the Washington Department of Licensing.
  • Final appointment is contingent upon acceptable driving history and successfully passing the fingerprint-based criminal history check, reference checks, and a pre-employment physical examination.

  • This position is non-exempt and overtime eligible.
  • Employees are paid on a bi-weekly schedule, every other Thursday with a standard workweek of 40 hours.
  • The work schedule is typically Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 4:30 pm.
  • This position is represented by the Service Employees International Union, Local 925.
