Work Schedule: Ally designates roles as (1) fully on-site, (2) hybrid, or (3) fully remote. Hybrid roles are generally expected to be in the office a certain number of days per week as indicated by your manager. We are seeking a Storage and Backup Operations Engineer within Ally's enterprise platform services space to execute the activities of IT Storage and Backup Operations including maintenance release planning, storage capacity planning, production system readiness and audit.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute day-one to an automation and engineering-focused organization. The contributions will have a noticeable impact on Ally’s Enterprise storage platforms and will be involved in efforts for continuous improvement to increase and ensure the reliability of Ally’s private and public cloud. The Storage and Backup Operations Engineer will get broad exposure to our private cloud and help drive new solutions and technologies within AWS.

The Work Itself

Own and lead the design, implementation, and administration of Cohesity-based backup and recovery solutions across hybrid infrastructure.

Protect and manage workloads such as:

  • Virtualization workloads including Hyper-V, Red Hat Openshift Virtualization and Nutanix plus container workloads.
  • Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server databases.
  • File shares, NFS, and clustered file systems (e.g., Veritas, GPFS).
  • Monitor and tune backup performance, ensure RPO/RTO alignment, and deliver capacity planning.
  • Automate backup and storage management using scripting (PowerShell, Python, etc.).
  • Collaborate with infrastructure, database, application, and cloud teams to deliver seamless backup services.
  • Lead incident response for data loss or restore failures and drive root cause analysis.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of backup configurations, policies, and procedures.
  • Evaluate, test, and implement new backup technologies and integration strategies.
  • Ensure compliance with data retention, protection, and security policies.
  • Support disaster recovery planning, execution, and auditing.
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance across teams.

The Skills You Bring

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in enterprise backup, storage, or data protection engineering.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience with Cohesity (administration, policy creation, restore workflows, replication, etc.).
  • Strong understanding of SAN, NAS, NFS, and clustered file systems.
  • Deep knowledge of virtualization backup strategies for (VMware, Hyper-V, AHV).
  • Proven experience backing up large-scale Oracle and SQL Server databases.
  • Scripting proficiency (e.g., PowerShell, Python, Bash) for automation and reporting.
  • Experience with cloud-integrated backup and storage architectures (AWS, Azure, GCP).
  • Excellent troubleshooting, performance tuning, and optimization skills.
  • Strong documentation habits and operational discipline.
  • Fundamentals of networking troubleshooting in terms of addressing, subnetting, routing and interface troubleshooting.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field; equivalent experience accepted.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Industry certifications: Cohesity Certified Administrator, VCP, Oracle OCA/OCP, Microsoft SQL Certifications, etc.
  • Experience with other backup platforms (e.g., Veeam, Commvault, Rubrik) a plus.
  • Exposure to ITIL frameworks, ticketing systems, and change management processes.

Base Pay Range: $110000 - $180000 USD

An individual's position in the range is determined by the specific role, the scope and responsibilities of the role, work experience, education, certification(s), training, and additional qualifications. We review internal pay, the competitive market, and business environment prior to extending an offer.

Incentive Compensation: This position is eligible to participate in our annual incentive plan.
