As a Research Scientist Supervisor I you will have the opportunity to:

  • Organize, supervise and direct a multi-disciplinary scientific staff to carry out the operations of the lab such as analytical testing, method development, maintenance of equipment and supplies and other research projects in support of DTSC core programs and external stakeholders
  • Review and approve staff's analytical reports to ensure data quality objectives are met
  • Manage laboratory infrastructure, including, but not limited to quality assurance, laboratory information management system (SLIMS), data review and interpretation, procurement of instruments and equipment, expenditure tracking, and technology innovations to ensure the lab meets the quality, productivity and efficiency to full fill the current and future needs of the Department and stakeholders
  • Independently plan, design and manage specific research studies and surveys of chemicals of interest in environmental samples or consumer products using the most current and/or emerging laboratory-based techniques to develop methods and/or guidelines for the Department and the public
  • Select, evaluate, and adapt methods, techniques, and procedures to optimize accuracy and precision of results in compliance with ISO 17025
  • Maintain expertise by assessing recent scientific developments and new technologies in the areas of monitoring, sampling, and analysis of toxic chemicals of emerging interest or concern to the Department and stakeholders

Desirable Qualifications We Look For:

  • Ability to organize, supervise, and manage a multidisciplinary scientific staff of research scientists, laboratory assistants and visiting scholars, as well as laboratory operations (quality control, data interpretation, budget, purchasing, technological innovation, etc.)
  • Ability to independently plan, design, and manage research studies related to environmental chemicals of concern (e.g., dioxins, PCBs, pesticides, PFAS, flame retardants, other persistent chemicals) in environmental and consumer product samples using state-of-the-art and/or new laboratory techniques (e.g., GC-/LC-HRMS, GC-/LC-MSMS, XRF, ion chromatography, any screening instrument) to improve DTSC decision making
  • Experience with monitoring lab performance and QA/QC data
