Job Introduction
BBC World Service is expanding its reach to serve audiences in Poland. The BBC News brand is driven by impartiality, enriched by the world’s largest network of correspondents and supported by our commitment to combatting misinformation. We will be offering Polish audiences verified news and expert analysis of key events, shaping the present day in Poland and the wider region. We will prioritise explanatory and analytical content to help audiences make sense of current developments in Europe and the world, to join the dots in a noisy environment of unverified and uncontextualized news bites. This role will work closely with other journalists to select and adapt a curated offer for the Polish market.
Main Responsibilities
We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Journalist with Polish language skills to adapt and produce text and video curated from World Service Languages and wider BBC News content for the BBC News Polish language offer. Main responsibilities include:
- Adapt BBC News text and video content into Polish, using translation and editing, for publication on BBC News Polish website, producing compelling SEO headlines and summaries.
- Shorten BBC News content where necessary, sensitively, with understanding of the BBC’s editorial guidelines and Polish audience needs.
- Use specific additional reporting to make BBC News content more engaging for the Polish audience.
- Translate or, where necessary produce, concise and compelling short video content - voiced or subtitled.
- Adapt BBC News text and video content into Polish, using translation and editing, for publication on BBC News Polish social media platforms, producing compelling SEO headlines and intros, curated for those platforms.
- Work closely with the rest of the Europe team to offer expertise on Polish issues, including but not limited to politics, history, international relations, society and culture.
- Communicate with wider BBC World Service Languages and BBC News teams to stay across content in production.
- Closely follow diary events in Poland and the wider region, to identify opportunities for curating and publishing content, sourced from BBC News.
- Sub-edit content produced by Journalists or other Senior Journalists.
- Sign off content for publication on the BBC News Polish website and any associated social media channels.
- Flag any editorial issues and discuss them with the Editor and Senior Journalists in the team.
- Offer ideas which have the potential to be developed into original journalism, to be done by wider BBC News teams on the ground.
- Always maintain professional journalistic standards of accuracy, impartiality and fair dealing, and adhering to the BBC’s Editorial guidelines.
- Ensure that BBC Editorial guidelines and all relevant legal, contractual and copyright requirements are met, referring upwards in cases of difficulty or doubt.
- Proactively identify possible improvements and innovation in working practices and coverage priorities.

Are you the right candidate?
- First language or equivalent proficiency in written and spoken Polish.
- Ability and experience writing in grammatical Polish to the highest standard.
- Fluency in written and spoken English.
- Strong knowledge of the global news agenda.
- Deep understanding of politics, business, society and culture in Central and Eastern Europe.
- Awareness of global threats posed by disinformation.
- Proven experience of writing compelling text articles and/or video scripts, both news and features, – you will need to provide examples of your work.
- Production of SEO headlines, for Polish and wider European regional audiences.
- Video production: scripting and editing an advantage.
- Understanding of the Polish and wider European media market and current challenges to factual journalism in the country and the region.
- Proven experience of producing impactful short videos an advantage.
Package Description
Band: D
Contract type: 10-month attachment / fixed term contract
Location: London or wider UK.
Proposed salary range: £40,000-£42,000 per annum depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.
