Summary

Materion is seeking a Senior Staff Engineer to join our rapidly growing Precision Optics and Thin Film Coatings team located in Westford, MA. The Sr. Staff Engineer leads and contributes to all aspects of custom thin film manufacturing, including requirement definition, new product development, new process development, cost estimation and quoting, thin film coating design, mechanical stress analysis, manufacturing instructions, fixture design, test plans, data analysis. Incumbent will lead troubleshoot manufacturing processes and process improvement efforts, as well as identify opportunities to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Ideal candidates must possess strong technical skills, the ability to perform complex problem solving, and a passion for continued education and learning opportunities. The position also requires the ability to adapt to competing priorities, be able to operate both independently and as a team leader amongst colleagues, and multi-task in a fast-paced environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop, design and optimize optical thin film coating designs to meet customer specifications.
  • Understand and operate metrology equipment used for characterizing thin films, including spectrophotometry and interferometry.
  • Collaborate with the sales team and customers overseeing SPC reports and data packages to confirm compliance with customer specifications.
  • Create detailed manufacturing plans for new product opportunities where needed.
  • Provide process documentation and operating instructions (PPAP, FMEA, control plans).
  • Work closely with process engineers to creatively solve problems, develop monitoring schemes and manufacture complex optical coatings.
  • Work closely with technicians to resolve technical issues, manage product defects and implement root cause solutions.
  • Support continuous improvement efforts and implement process improvements as a technical leader.
  • Ensure alignment with commercial team and carry voice of customer on technical issues during contract execution.
  • Support Material Review Board for the disposition of discrepant material and assist in the determination of root cause and corrective action.
  • Champions collaboration with supporting functions in line with Engineering Manager priority and guidance. Ensure quality and safety of operations and support Operations initiatives as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required, with bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent experience in optical coating design and process development.
  • A minimum of 10 years of Engineering experience in design and manufacturing process development, optical coatings or similar technologies required.
  • Experience in a low volume / high mix product environment is an asset
  • Exhibit sound interpersonal skills involving interfacing, coordinating and negotiating with company personnel at all levels, customers and suppliers
  • Demonstrated ability in applying SPC, Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing skills in problem solving, statistics, manufacturing quality, and quality principles
  • Ability to understand, analyze, and resolve complex technical problems
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently in a fast-paced environment
  • Exhibit excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in engineering or science discipline, Optics and / or business focus
  • Experience with SPC tools, DOE, and root cause analysis (e.g., 5-Whys, Fishbone).
  • Track record of successful project management experience, leading multiple projects simultaneously
  • Background in high-mix, low-volume production environments.
