Job Overview:
The Assistant Vice President (AVP) of Patient Access serves as a senior leader responsible for the day-to-day management, optimization, and execution of core patient access operations across the health system. This includes oversight of scheduling, registration, financial clearance, insurance verification, pre-authorization, and referral management activities.
Working under the guidance of the Vice President of Patient Access Operations, the AVP plays a key role in translating enterprise-wide access strategies into measurable operational improvements that enhance the patient experience, increase revenue capture, mitigate denials, and ensure compliance with payer and regulatory requirements.
Qualifications:
Minimum:
- Bachelor s Degree in Healthcare Administration, Business, Finance, or a related field
- 7+ years of progressive leadership experience in patient access or front-end revenue cycle roles
- 3+ years in a leadership or management role overseeing multi-site or multi-departmental operations
Preferred:
- Master s Degree in Healthcare Administration, Business, or Public Health
- Experience in a large health system or academic medical center environment
- Strong working knowledge of Epic access-related modules
- Familiarity with revenue cycle benchmarks and payer requirements
Essential Functions:
Operational Oversight
- Direct the daily operations of all patient access functions, ensuring efficient, accurate, and compliant front-end processes across inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Manage staff, processes, and policies related to patient registration, insurance verification, financial clearance, referral coordination, and eligibility review.
- Collaborate with facility and departmental leaders to ensure streamlined workflows, high-quality patient interactions, self-service registration utilization when applicable, and timely access to care.
Process Improvement & Performance Management
- Identify and implement process improvements aimed at reducing denials, improving registration accuracy, and increasing financial clearance rates.
- Track, monitor, and report performance metrics (e.g., registration accuracy, POS collections, wait times, eligibility verification) to drive decision-making.
- Ensure alignment of departmental activities with system-wide KPIs and revenue cycle goals.
Technology & Systems Optimization
- Support the optimization of Epic and other access-related technologies, in partnership with IT and Revenue Cycle teams.
- Leverage automation tools and analytics to enhance patient access outcomes and operational efficiency.
- Participate in system upgrades, user testing, and continuous improvement initiatives for EHR and revenue-related applications.
Compliance, Training & Quality Assurance
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and payer regulations, including HIPAA, CMS, and accreditation requirements.
- Develop and maintain standardized procedures, training programs, and quality control measures for all front-end functions.
- Provide direct supervision and development of Patient Access leaders and staff to ensure a high-performing team culture.
Collaboration & Communication
- Serve as the liaison between front-end access teams and internal stakeholders including clinical departments, finance, managed care, and hospital leadership.
- Actively participate in operational planning, budgeting, and project implementation efforts.
- Support the development of patient-centered access models through strong cross-functional collaboration.
