Work Schedule

29 hours per week to be scheduled Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:30 AM and 5:00 PM. Occasional weekends and evenings will be required.

Job Description

Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads – both students and employers – for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 28,000 students in 2019-20. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,203 graduates in 2019-2020, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 36% enrolled at TCC. TCC’s institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

Position Summary:

The Office Assistant position will be responsible for assisting in the daily operation of Student Life. Examples of daily operations include mail delivery and distribution, office filing, project assistance, event assistance, building rounds, procurement processing, program development, providing excellent customer service to students, faculty, and external stakeholders, and working closely with Student Center Director and staff. Additionally, it is expected that this assistant will uphold strong customer service standards for dress, greetings, phone calls, and expedient customer response, be cross trained in other departments throughout the building and attend required student employee staff development meetings/programs.

Functional Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for fiscal management and procurement processes within the Student Center department.
  • Demonstrated ability to use intermediate functions in word processing, spreadsheet, database, internet research, and email software applications proficiently required.
  • Responsible for assisting with program development.
  • Ability to use a variety of software programs such as the Microsoft Office Suite to efficiently produce correspondence, reports, and other documents required.
  • Collaboration and teamwork skills required.
  • Ability to take direction, work independently, organize and prioritize work assignments, anticipate deadlines, and respond to changing priorities as needed required.
  • Knowledge of effective customer services techniques and superior customer service skills required.
  • Knowledge of student information databases.
  • Knowledge of and skills in proper telephone etiquette, office etiquette/procedures related to telephone calls, visitors, and confidentiality.
  • Other duties that may be assigned.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

  • Ability to perform active listening and demonstrate an understanding of customer concerns and needs being relational.
  • Highly involved in student engagement, student development, and program development.
  • Demonstrated customer service or hospitality management skills.
  • Basic skills in operating a computer for using Microsoft Applications and troubleshooting.
  • Ability to interact in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills.
  • Experience with activities and event planning; and with event set-ups (i.e. experience setting up tables, chairs, equipment, etc.).
  • Ability to perform duties independently and as a member of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize duties in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Understand and be able to work on procurement processes for the student center.
  • Punctuality and the ability to work a flexible schedule to support the various events and hours of operation of the building.
  • Demonstrated ability to enforce and adhere to all relevant policies and procedures set forth by the Norfolk Student Center and Tidewater Community College.
