Work Unit | Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories

Faculty and staff at the CSU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories (VDL) are among the nation’s finest in their fields of expertise and offer comprehensive diagnostic services. The mission of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) is to provide timely, accurate and pertinent animal disease diagnostic services and educational outreach to veterinarians, animal industries and animal interests. The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory will strive to meet the goals the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and the University through research to develop new approaches to disease identification, investigation, prevention and through education of professional veterinary medical, graduate, and post-doctoral students.

Position Summary

This position exists to support the Clinical Pathology Laboratory by receiving, verifying, charging, preparing, storing and distributing samples for testing; by organizing and disseminating laboratory results by verbal reporting, photocopying, filing, and telephoning and/or faxing reports; by keeping records for the purpose of cost accounting for the clinical pathology laboratory; by maintaining and updating the functionality of the Clinical Pathology Laboratory Information System (LIS). This position will have primary responsibility for the scanning of cytology preparations into a digital image database for evaluation by the pathologist and file and storage maintenance. Sample handling may include spinning tubes containing blood or other body fluids (possibly infectious) and transferring plasma or serum to another tube. Reflecting departmental and institutional values, candidates are expected to have the ability to advance the College’s commitment to client service.

Note to Applicants: This position is required to work Monday – Friday, work hours may vary between 10 am-8pm. Clinical Pathology is an essential services unit and will be open on CSU closure days (inclement weather, holidays, etc.) – ability to work on these days is required.

The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; Colorado State University Diagnostic Laboratories will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Required Job Qualifications

  • High School Diploma (or GED)
  • Demonstrate clear and concise communication skills and attention to detail as evidenced from applicant’s written materials.
  • College-level coursework in Data Management and/or a related field will substitute for the one year of required experience if a transcript documenting that course work is attached at the time of application

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Demonstrated use of medical terminology.
  • Demonstrated experience with LIS data systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in data management software or digital image handling.
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in computer sciences.
  • One year of experience in a veterinary medicine or other laboratory environment with experience handling biological materials or diagnostic samples.
  • Background knowledge or work experience in laboratory/veterinary testing environment including knowledge of equipment, tools, and systems.
  • Demonstrated clear and concise communication skills and attention to detail as evidenced from applicant’s written materials.
