About this Position

Langston University invites applications for a dedicated and dynamic individual to serve as the Coordinator and Librarian for the Melvin B. Tolson Black Heritage Center. This individual will steward the Center’s extensive collection of African and African American historical artifacts while supporting the university’s research, teaching, and cultural outreach missions. The ideal candidate will bring a passion for history, education, and community engagement, and possess strong organizational, instructional, and technical skills.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Support the research, teaching, and learning needs of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Coordinate, manage, and preserve the Melvin B. Tolson Black Heritage Center, including the care and display of its significant collections.
  • Develop and lead public programs, educational exhibitions, and guided tours for diverse audiences.
  • Conduct library orientations and teach information literacy sessions.
  • Provide reference and research assistance across academic disciplines.
  • Collaborate with library staff and university departments on cultural and academic initiatives.
  • Deliver exceptional customer service to students, faculty, and community members.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's
    • Library and Information Studies or a closely related field.
  • (degree must be conferred on or before agreed upon start date)
    • Experience in a library setting with an emphasis on public services or reference.

Skills, Proficiencies, and/or Knowledge:

  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated technical skills and a willingness to stay current with evolving tools and platforms.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Library and Information Studies from an ALA-accredited program.
    • Experience working in a museum, special collections, or archival environment.
    • Prior work experience in higher education or a university library.
