Veterinary Technician

Hourly Pay Range: $21.29 – $23.81

Job Summary: The Veterinary Technician will assist veterinarians with clinical duties, perform laboratory sample analysis, evaluate inventory, purchase lab, medical, and pharmaceutical products, schedule and coordinate veterinary procedures with other animal subdivisions, manage carcass disposition, implement safety procedures, perform routine quality control monitoring of hospital equipment, and implement the radiation exposure control program. This role will also maintain a positive culture of collaboration, accountability, and respectful behavior.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Clinical Duties - Assist with animal procedures. Perform anesthesia and assigned veterinary procedures with limited veterinary supervision. Clean and sterilize medical equipment and assist in handling controlled and hazardous substances. Provide nursing care as well as transport and restraint of animals.
- Laboratory duties - Collect lab specimens safely from a wide variety of zoo animals. Prepare specimens and perform laboratory analysis and sample processing (e.g., fecal analysis, hematology, serum chemistry, urinalysis, cytology, etc.) and distribute samples to specialized laboratories. Maintain the sample storage system. Perform computer entry of laboratory results.
- Zoo hospital management - Develop and implement hospital protocols and standard operating procedures. Manage biohazard waste. Coordinate parasite control program including sample request and submission. Manage inventory and order lab, medical, and pharmaceutical supplies. Coordinate equipment repair.
- Quality Control - Perform routine quality control testing on various medical equipment including monitoring and testing oxygen system for leaks, testing anesthesia machine for leaks, and repair if necessary. Monitor liquid nitrogen storage tanks and purge outdated drugs monthly.
- Perform all other duties as assigned - Including, but not limited to: Assist with carcass disposition. Participate in school group programs. Contribute to the development and improvement of the profession through participation in conservation projects, research projects, and professional organizations.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Possession of a valid United States Driver’s license, able to be maintained throughout employment.
- Possession of a Veterinary Technician Associate Degree or higher.
- At least one (1) year experience as a veterinary technician, including diagnostic testing.
- Valid Veterinary Technician certification.
- Intermediate knowledge of computer and software applications including word processing software and spreadsheets.
- Willing to obtain basic knowledge of Zoological Information Management Systems (ZIMS) within six (6) months of hire.
- Willing to obtain basic knowledge of County cloud-based applications for expense processing and procurement within six (6) months of hire.
- Able to lift/carry and push/pull up to 50 lbs.
- Willing to work overtime, weekends, or rotating shifts.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working at a Zoo.
NOTE: This original application is open to permanent residents of the United States. Appointee must establish residency in the state of Wisconsin within six months of start date and maintain such residency during incumbency. In accordance with Section 11, Rule 3 of the Civil Service Rules a non-competitive examination will be held for this position. The non-competitive examination will consist of criteria deemed appropriate by the Director of Human Resources.
