WSP is currently initiating a search for a Lead Geotechnical Engineer to join our Mine Engineering and Stability team based in our Lakewood, CO. office on a full-time basis. In this role you will provide geotechnical engineering assistance and guidance for projects worldwide with our Mining Engineering and Stability Team. Candidate will lead in developing and supporting the multi-disciplinary mine stability team through advanced technical practices and problem solving and will demonstrate a strong understanding of rock mechanic principles to help solve complex challenges facing our surface and underground mining clients.

Your Impact

  • Provide consultation on open pit and underground mining projects for domestic and international clients
  • Direct a wide variety of mining rock mechanics management projects, including field investigation, laboratory testing and interpretation; design and construction; and geotechnical analysis
  • Direct and review geotechnical analyses with a focus on rock mechanics; provide technical expertise in your specialization
  • Manage quality control and risks during geotechnical and design work, including critical review of results in coordination with Principals
  • Direct or manage large, complex, and/or multidisciplinary projects according to client-approved scopes of work, and deliver high quality reports and drawings on time and within budget in coordination with Principals
  • Provide advice to mining operations
  • Maintain existing client relationships and develop new business opportunities
  • Complete or review technical proposals and design work packages in response to client needs in coordination with Principals
  • Coach and mentor junior and intermediate staff with respect to their career growth and professional development
  • Participate in hiring, performance reviews, and training decisions
  • Participate in development and implementation of WSP’s mining business plan
  • Work collaboratively with other senior members of the Global Mining team to implement the business growth strategy, develop, and maintain relationships with a broad client base
  • Participate in and promote a safety-first culture
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or post-graduate degree in mining, geotechnical or geological engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • 8-12+ years of relevant (post-degree) experience working in a consulting engineering or mining industry environment
  • Currently registered as a Professional Engineer
  • Expertise in rock mechanics and geological engineering, with a technical specialization
  • Excellent technical writing, interpersonal communication, and emotional intelligence; ability to establish good relationships with clients and colleagues
  • Experience as a consulting engineer or technical services role
  • Proven ability to establish and maintain solid client relationships
  • Strong business acumen and leadership skills
  • Strong, client-focused project direction and business development skills
  • Ability to manage risk and have excellent engineering judgement
  • Ability to effectively delegate work and lead diverse, interdisciplinary project teams
  • Multilingual (verbal and written) candidate would be an asset
  • Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Demonstrated high-level of self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Works independently with minimal oversight and provides guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
  • Well-developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, computations, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness at coordinating and assertively directing subcontractors and others to consistently complete tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Mining, Geotechnical or Geological engineering, or closely related discipline

Compensation:

Expected Salary (Colorado only): $98,300 - $132,700

WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and/or offer for this position within the state of Colorado, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
