What You Will Do
Accelerator Operations and Technology - Mechanical Design Engineering (AOT-MDE) is seeking a highly self-motivated Accelerator Vacuum Technician (Engineered Systems Tec 4 or 5) to join the LANSCE Vacuum Systems Team. Responsibilities include but are not limited to; troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of vacuum system components like scroll pumps, roots pumps, turbomolecular pumps, cryogenic pumps, ion pumps, and pressure gauges. The candidate will provide demonstrated experience working on accelerator vacuum systems, including finding and repairing leaks; identifying, purchasing, and maintaining an inventory of spare parts; planning and preparing for work in the future; following instructions closely and calling supervisor when unsure about something; working closely with team members and personnel from outside the team or group; staying highly productive while prioritizing safety of self and others. This position can expect rotating on-call duties where one must be available 24 hours per day for a week, every other week during accelerator beam production. Call-ins can be at any time of the night. Occasional overtime will be required for urgently needed work. This position will be filled at the Accelerator Vacuum Technician (Engineered Systems Tec 4, or 5) level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Engineered Systems Tec 4 ($71,200-$112,900)
Candidate has demonstrated "Senior Skilled" knowledge and skills in troubleshooting and repair of mechanical and electrical systems. On a routine basis and under specific direction from the Team Leader, the candidate will, with their fellow technicians, troubleshoot vacuum pumps and vacuum instrumentation. They will sometimes work under time pressure but still make wise decisions about keeping themselves and their colleagues safe. The candidate will be given specific instructions from the Team Leader or senior Technician and be expected to carry out routine tasks effectively, promptly, and safely with some supervision. The candidate will manage their own time with some input from the Team Leader. The candidate will provide input to senior technician and Team Leader as they prioritize, plan, and prepared for future work. The candidate will provide input to the Team Leader to find solutions to especially challenging, long-term issues for which the team is responsible.
Engineered Systems Tec 5 ($85,900-$139,900)
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level a candidate selected at the higher level would be doing:

On a routine basis and under broad direction from the Team Leader, the candidate will independently or with their fellow technicians, troubleshoot vacuum pumps and vacuum instrumentation. They will sometimes work under time pressure but still make wise decisions about keeping themselves and their colleagues safe. The candidate will be given general or minimal direction from the Team Leader, and expected to lead specialized, complex, and high-risk tasks effectively, promptly, and safely with little to no supervision. The candidate will manage their own time with minimal or no input from the Team Leader. The candidate and the Team Leader will work together to prioritize, plan, and prepared for future work. The candidate will work with the Team Leader to find solutions to especially challenging, long-term issues for which the team is responsible.

Education/Experience Level 4: Position require an Associates' Degree in a related field and a minimum of 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, additional training and/or certification may be expected.
Education/Experience Level 5: Position require an Associates' Degree in a related field and a minimum of 7 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, additional training and/or certification may be expected.
Desired Qualifications:
Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Vision, Speech, and Hearing; reading vision, walking, climbing stairs, climbing ladders, crawling, twisting the trunk or back, balancing, applying torque with hands or arms, lifting 50 pounds, use of hand tools like wrenches and pliers, use of small power tools like drills and impact drivers.

Work Environment
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law.
