What will you do as a I&E Maintenance Technician?

The I&E Maintenance Technician is responsible for the safe and efficient maintenance, troubleshooting, calibration, repair, and installation of all electrical and instrumentation systems, equipment, and controls within the terminal. This role ensures the continuous and reliable operation of critical process systems in accordance with all applicable codes, safety regulations, and company standards.

What do we expect from you as a I&E Maintenance Technician?

  • Must possess or be able to obtain a TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential) as required by the Maritime Transportation Security Act.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 3-5 years of direct experience in the Instrumentation & Electrical industry, preferably within a process or industrial environment (e.g., chemical, petrochemical, oil & gas terminal).
  • Must possess a valid state Driver’s License.
  • Must be fluent in English (read, write, speak).
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and follow written job instructions, directions, and regulatory documents (e.g., U.S. Coast Guard manuals).
  • Proficient computer skills, including experience with Google Suite and navigating CMMS systems such as Hexagon EAM, Maximo, etc.
  • Ability to prioritize work and strong multi-tasking skills.
  • Proven ability to function effectively as a team player.
  • Ability to work a regular work schedule, as well as overtime as workload dictates, and participate in an on-call schedule.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Electrical Journeyman State License.
  • NCCER certification in Industrial Electrician or Instrument Technician.

What does your day look like?

Your core responsibilities are:

  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on electrical and instrumentation equipment, following established procedures and schedules.
  • Execute functional tests, calibrations, troubleshooting, and repairs on a wide range of instruments, electrical equipment, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and process/environmental analyzers.
  • Install, maintain, and repair electrical and instrumentation and control systems, including major plant power distribution system controllers, wiring, switches, control valves, and alarm systems in both PLC & DCS environments.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex equipment failures, utilizing strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Read, interpret, and modify Ladder Logic and Cause & Effect Diagrams to ensure system operation meets design requirements.
  • Assist in the design and selection of new equipment or systems for process improvements or new installations.
  • Ensure compliance with daily work order schedules and coordinate with other crafts as needed or assigned by the I&E Supervisor.
  • Maintain accurate records within Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) such as Hexagon EAM or Maximo, including findings, repair history, and potential improvements.
  • Assist with inventory control and the selection of necessary parts and tools for repairs.
  • Ensure excellent housekeeping practices in the work area to maintain a safe and organized environment.
  • Ensure strict compliance with activities described in the permit-to-work system and all safety procedures, including Federal OSHA and state OSHA guidelines.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and adhere to regulations concerning Hazardous Material Safety Administration (PHMSA) and other product handling procedures based on Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
  • Possess strong knowledge of NEC electrical codes, voltage, current, and power levels up to 600 volts, as well as single-phase and three-phase electrical systems.
  • Familiarity with 12.474 KV power distribution systems and conduit/raceway installations.

Work Environment

This position requires an employee to be in an office environment as well as exposed to outside elements. Most extreme elements are heat in the summer months of up to 104°F (40°C) and some exposure to cold of generally no less than 15°F (-10°C) in the winter months. There will be exposure to various chemicals and compounds, including fumes and smells, some of them hazardous. The employee may enter confined spaces and work in elevated environments. Employees must be able to wear PPE required by the location. General office noise may be experienced and louder sounds and vibrations when outside. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. All environments are safe with appropriate PPE.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, sit, speak and hear. The employee is required to stand, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; the employee may be required, on occasion, to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee may be required to climb ladders/storage tanks up to 50’ in height. The employee may be required to enter confined spaces. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Employees may be required to travel by air, rail, bus, or car.
