Steam Plant Operator - Full Time - Day/Nights

The Steam Plant Operator is responsible for operation and maintenance of high pressure, gas and oil fired steam boilers. The operator will complete required record keeping as necessary for the plant and equipment.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates understanding of emergency procedures, fire drills, evacuation protocols, and internal/external disaster procedures, including personal role during a fire.
  • Maintains a safe environment by staying alert to potential hazards like wet floors, blocked egress, and other unsafe conditions.
  • Keeps work area clean, safe, and organized daily, following infection prevention and universal precautions.
  • Provides excellent customer service, ensuring no substantiated complaints from patients, physicians, staff, or visitors.
  • Uses proper lifting techniques to prevent injuries and proactively addresses environmental safety hazards.
  • Locks and tags out unsafe equipment for repair and promptly reports it to the Facility Manager.
  • Operates steam plant boilers according to manufacturer's specifications and required codes, performing approved tests and maintaining required water treatment levels.
  • Records and reports boiler operation data to the designated manager, ensuring all preventive maintenance is conducted on time.
  • Complies with medical center and local fire safety codes, demonstrating knowledge of emergency response procedures and firefighting equipment.
  • Uses the Facility Work Order System, follows "Lock Out - Tag Out" procedures, and assists with other facility tasks, including swing operator duties at the main hospital.

Required Skilled and Experience:

  • Education - High School Diploma / GED
  • Experience - Ability to operate high pressure boiler systems. Recommended is a minimum three years' experience in operating high-pressure boilers.
  • Licensure - A clean valid NYS Driver's license.

Physical Requirements

  • This position requires the ability to lift objects. The physical ability to rapidly respond to equipment failures within the plant is required. Work may include climbing ladders and working from heights above the boilers. The candidate will have the ability to work inside the plant with a warmer than normal environment which is not air conditioned. Good communication skills and the ability to work independently are required for this position.

Location and Travel Requirements

  • Location: Cayuga Medical Center - 101 Dates Drive Ithaca NY, 14850
  • Shift: Swing Shift - The employee will work all shifts applicable to the role.

Pay Range Disclosure:

  • $29.00 to $37.00 per hour
