Job Description

Chesapeake Parks, Recreation, and Tourism is seeking a full time groundskeeper who is customer service oriented and dependable to perform essential services for the citizens of Chesapeake.

What You’ll Be Doing:

As a Groundskeeper, your work keeps the city’s sports and recreation spaces safe, clean, and ready for action. This includes:

  • Lining and dragging athletic fields for baseball, softball, soccer, football, lacrosse, and more
  • Mowing lawns, picking up trash, filling holes, and keeping the turf in top shape
  • Repairing benches, bleachers, goals, and other sports equipment
  • Performing custodial tasks like bathroom cleaning and trash disposal
  • Carpentry work – fixing signs, fences, shelters, and more
  • Landscaping – mowing, trimming, pruning, aerating, and fertilizing

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Providing friendly, helpful customer service and responding to citizen requests
  • Preparing fields to VHSL standards for events (lining, leveling, setting up equipment)
  • Operating lawn and garden equipment, power tools, and City vehicles
  • Supporting special events: setting up tents, fencing, sound equipment, and post-event clean-up
  • Conducting safety checks on equipment, vehicles, and recreational areas
  • Assisting during emergency operations – snow removal, storm clean-up, and more

You’ll need to be able to lift up to 50 pounds, bend, stoop, climb, and move equipment. A positive

attitude and a strong team spirit are essential.

Required Qualifications

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT:

Requires high school diploma, GED, OR specialized vocational training.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

  • Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with the City Driving Standards.
  • Ability to obtain a pesticide certification within 6 months of employment.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:

None.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous customer service experience.

Previous work experience in athletic fields, landscaping, and/or facility operations.

Knowledgeable of methods, tools and equipment used in the repair and general maintenance of grounds and facilities.

Ability to work MOST weekends and some holidays as needed.
