Job Description and Duties

Under the general direction of the Information Technology Manager I (ITM I), the incumbent performs at the expert level of this career series. Incumbent is the ultimate technical authority and acts as the technical mentor to other administrators within the Unit. The incumbent will be responsible for 24x7 hour support to troubleshoot the more complex problems and issues. Incumbent will lead and/or participate in the most complex projects, which include troubleshooting, monitoring, enhancement, and maintenance of the computer systems that house the Department’s critical applications. Incumbent formulates strategic planning activities and acts as a consultant to other application staff, network staff, system administration staff, vendors, and agencies as the recognized technical specialist for the Department’s Linux environment. The incumbent must be competent in all areas of Linux and be able to support complex systems by utilizing skill sets that include tools & techniques, troubleshooting, system design & builds, best practices, and liaison work. Incumbent also participates as the top independent technical specialist in the analysis and planning of computer systems installations and enhancements for in-house and external clients.

Working Conditions

This position is designated for telework under Government Code section 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California and may require reporting to headquarters or field offices and facilities to fulfill operational needs. All telework schedules are subject to change and may be reevaluated at any time. Telework does not change the terms and conditions of employment, the essential functions of job duties, or required compliance with the Department of Justice policies.

This position is eligible for telework, and will be required to report to the office as needed/required. The successful candidate must reside in California upon appointment.

This position is located in the California Justice Information Services Division, Technology Support Bureau, Strategic Transport & Technology Services Branch, Unix Server Administration Unit.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  1. Professional experience supporting California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (CLETS).
  2. Current professional experience in system administration supporting Red Hat based Linux operating systems, including security, high availability, networking, and storage technologies.
  3. Current professional experience scripting (i.e. Ansible, BASH, python, etc.).
  4. Current experience with Red Hat OpenShift or container infrastructures.
  5. Current understanding of and experience in virtualization technologies.
  6. Ability to analyze and evaluate complex software products for applicability and use for services hosted by an organization.
  7. Develop and provide training to the unit, bureau, and other data center personnel regarding an area of responsibility.
  8. Experience with working with Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform (or Ansible Tower), Red Hat Directory Server, and Red Hat Satellite.
  9. Experience working on server hardware.
  10. Knowledge of JBoss, Database, and Web server technologies.
  11. Strong ability to provide technical advice including planning for Linux design, installation and modification, and evaluation activities for an organization.
  12. Strong ability to lead teams.
  13. Strong ability to perform analysis to determine system efficiency and make recommendations for changes to optimize system performance.
  14. Strong ability to troubleshoot infrastructure hardware and software problems.
  15. Strong Knowledge of TCP/IP networks and the OSI model.
  16. Strong technical writing skills and ability to develop and promulgate technical materials for use and/or education for the unit, bureau, and other data center personnel.
