DESCRIPTION

We are seeking a Technical Program Manager to join Checkout Engineering team within World Wide Grocery Store Tech (WWGST) business unit of Amazon in Austin, TX. The Checkout engineering team is responsible for Checkout application and services i.e. Point-of-sale (POS), Self Checkout (SCO), Hospitality POS (HPOS) software for US stores, and Development of boundary systems integrations with data authorities and business services of Core Amazon services.

The ideal candidate will own the "when" of delivering projects, along with contributing significantly to the "what" and "how" of our POS solutions and integrations. You will be the driving force behind timelines and execution, while also playing a key role in shaping the direction and implementation of these critical systems.

Key job responsibilities

As a TPM in the Checkout Engineering team, you will work across multiple teams to ensure successful build, implementation and maintenance of both POS software and boundary system integrations.

You will be responsible for:

  • Owning delivery timelines ("when") for all US POS initiatives and boundary system integration projects
  • Contributing to solution design and feature prioritization ("what") in collaboration with product managers and stakeholders
  • Helping shape implementation strategies and technical approaches ("how") alongside engineering teams
  • Developing and maintaining project roadmaps and release schedules across multiple concurrent workstreams
  • Managing cross-functional teams and coordinating efforts to ensure seamless integration of POS systems with existing infrastructure
  • Identifying and mitigating risks, resolving blockers, and escalating issues as needed to keep projects on track
  • Driving the execution and improvement of SAFe Agile practices across distributed teams
  • Establishing and tracking key performance indicators (KPIs) for projects
  • Facilitating effective communication among global team members, stakeholders, and leadership
  • Coordinate with other teams to identify and manage cross-team dependencies
  • Monitor and leverage engineering team metrics to track program health

A typical day for a Technical Program Manager in the Checkout Engineering team involves coordinating across global teams, leading design reviews, and managing cross-functional meetings. They track project progress, resolve dependencies, and oversee engineering initiatives of their team. Key responsibilities include creating program updates - weekly reports, monthly dashboards, and quarterly reviews - to keep leadership informed on progress and risks. The TPM balances tactical execution with strategic planning, ensuring smooth operations of production while meeting compliance requirements and driving continuous improvement.

The World Wide Grocery Store Tech (WWGST) Checkout Engineering team is a 2-Pizza team, an agile group specializing in grocery technology. We manage global checkout technology for Whole Foods Market stores. Our team uses our deep grocery and engineering expertise to deliver efficient, compliant checkout experiences. Working closely with cross-functional partners, we ensure efficient operations while continuously improving our systems. Our mission is to drive innovative solutions that enhance the Customer shopping experience.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5+ years of technical product or program management experience
  • 5+ years of project management disciplines including scope, schedule, budget, quality, along with risk and critical path management experience
  • Experience managing technical programs across cross-functional teams, building processes and coordinating release schedules
  • Strong understanding of retail systems and point-of-sale technologies
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and influence without direct authority
  • Experience building and evaluating system-level technical design

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 3+ years of working directly with engineering teams experience
  • Experience with payment processing systems and regulations
  • Knowledge of POS software implementation and maintenance
  • Understanding of retail technology ecosystems
  • Experience working with UK and Canadian markets
  • Understanding of payment security standards (e.g., PCI DSS) and compliance requirements
  • Experience with large-scale system integrations in a retail environment
  • Previous experience in grocery or retail technology
