Job Description

The Team and Job Summary

The projects that an Sr Consulting Scientist works on will include highly complex litigations involving multi-party, multi-media, and multi-contaminant sites that include impacts to soil, ground water, surface water, sediments, air and other natural resources. The Sr Consulting Scientist is responsible for researching and drafting expert reports, affidavits and disclosures that evaluate and critique historical records, expert and fact witness testimony and exhibits, site remediation reports, remedial design and actions, laboratory data and other analytical measurements. In this capacity, the Sr Consulting Scientist is responsible for performing statistical data analysis, environmental evaluations, fate and transport modeling, damages calculations and based on the foregoing using its education, experience and expertise in formulating and preparing expert opinions for use in depositions and at trial. These duties are performed individually or as part of a team. In a team setting, the Sr Consulting Scientist is responsible for directing these activities. The Sr Consulting Scientist is responsible for adhering to established legal rules of law, litigation goals and timeframes and will have an in-depth knowledge of applicable federal, state and local environmental statutes, regulations and guidance documents. Responsibilities may include marketing activities such as writing technical papers, giving technical presentations, proposal writing and attending technical marketing meetings with clients.

Job Responsibilities

  • The Sr Consulting Scientist will work predominantly in an office or remote setting preparing expert reports and opinions and the underlying supporting documents. It will also oversee any field investigations and remediation activities that are required that support its expert work.
  • Will work under the direction of the Senior Director of Environmental Liability and Advisory Services (ELAS) in executing its expert work.
  • Provide expert depositions, testimony, demonstratives, exhibits and opinions as needed
  • Perform expert analysis related to remedial investigations, feasibility studies, remedial designs, remedial actions, Records of Decision, human health and ecological risk assessments, allocations, apportionments, damage assessments, environmental modeling, natural resource damages, National Contingency Plan compliance, and CERCLA administrative filings.
  • Develop and maintain client relationships
  • Train and mentor junior level staff

Qualifications

  • Ph. D in geology, biology, chemistry, environmental science or engineering and 30+ years of experience in complex, multi-media investigations and remediation with an environmental consulting firm and/or governmental agency
  • Expert in the technical aspects of CERCLA, NCP, RCRA, Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, TSCA, NEPA and state counterpart statutes and regulations.
  • Expert in due diligence requirements and commercial and industrial property transactional requirements
  • Self-starter with strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, specifically Word and Excel
  • Flexible to work outside of normal business hours as required
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. required. Professional licenses are desirable
  • Published Author of Relevant Technical Papers
  • Testifying Experience
  • Independent Research Experience

Physical and Mental Job Qualifications

  • Most duties performed on feet.
  • Able to carry equipment, as much as 30lbs unassisted.
  • Push or pull items.
  • Able to reach above head.
  • Able to bend at the knee.
  • Able to climb ladders to reach high areas.
  • Able to wear a self-contained breathing apparatus.
  • Able to squat, kneel or crouch in confined spaces when necessary.
  • Able to detect burning sensations on skin etc.
  • Vision must be correctable to at least 20:40 with ability to distinguish colors with good depth perception and peripheral vision.

A reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role is 125/hr - 150/hr. Any offered salary range is based on a wide array of factors including but not limited to skillset, experience, training, location, scope of role, management responsibility, etc.
