Duties

  • Exercises technical and administrative supervision over subordinate workers.
  • Plans the use of subordinate workers, equipment, facilities, and materials based on workload projections on a weekly or monthly basis.
  • Establishes deadlines, priorities, and work sequences, in accordance with general work schedules, methods, and policies established by higher-level supervisors.
  • Determines the number and types of workers needed to accomplish specific projects.
  • Assigns work to individual workers by verbal or written instructions.
  • Monitors work in progress and inspects completed work to assure work order requirements.
  • Sets performance standards for subordinates and makes formal appraisals of their work performance.
  • Counsels employees and discusses informal complaints and grievances with workers and union representatives.
  • Initiates disciplinary actions as needed.
  • Maintains work reports and records.

Qualifications

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Effort: Performs work on hard surfaces and in work areas that require standing, stooping, bending, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts items that weigh up to 40 pounds; acquires assistance from other personnel or uses Materials Handling Equipment (MHE) when lifting heavier items. Moderate physical effort is used in operating hand and foot controls when operating MHE.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in a warehousing environment. Work is usually performed inside, and occasionally outside when using materials handling equipment (i.e., forklifts to move items between warehouses), in areas that are hot, cold, drafty or damp. May be exposed to dusty, dirty, or greasy conditions. Incumbent is regularly exposed to the possibility of electrical shock (AC or DC), cuts, scrapes, bruises, abrasions, and broken bones from falls or falling items, collisions, shifting loads or overturning of vehicles. Working conditions are a normal part of the job and are considered in the evaluation of the position.

Safety and Health Requirements: Employee is required to wear safety clothing and equipment appropriate for the job and work area where assigned. Types of protective clothing and equipment include, but are not limited to, the following: safety eyeglasses, respirators, and steel-toed shoes and protective clothing such as gloves, mask, apron, and coveralls. Other types may be required as deemed necessary by authorized management officials

Drug-Free Workplace Policy

The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) is committed to maintaining a safe, drug-free workplace. All DLA employees are required to refrain from illegal drug use on and off duty. DLA conducts pre-employment, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, and random drug testing.

Applicants tentatively selected for employment in testing designated positions will undergo a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Refusal to undergo testing or testing positive for illegal drugs will result in withdrawal of the tentative job offer and a six-month denial of employment with DLA from the date of the drug test. Employees in drug testing designated positions are subject to random drug testing.

The DLA drug testing panel tests for the following substances: marijuana, cocaine, opiates, heroin, phencyclidine, amphetamines, methamphetamines, fentanyl, norfentanyl, methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA), and opioids.
