Automotive Technician Assistant – Fleet Operations

Description Position is responsible for supporting Automotive Technicians by assisting with a variety of automotive and small engine repair and maintenance tasks. Must provide own tools

Starting Pay Range: $17.95 - $23.35 - $29.20 (Commensurate with experience & qualifications)

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS INCLUDE:

  • Performs or assists with scheduled maintenance services, including oil changes, lubrications, and engine tune-ups, to ensure maximum vehicle performance and smooth operation.
  • Changes and repair tires, installs and service batteries, and assists with spark plugs, fan belts and other basic mechanical components.
  • Conducts inspections of mechanical and electrical components to ensure proper functioning and safety.
  • Prepares vehicles for repair by cleaning and organizing work areas.
  • Ensures all tools and equipment are well-maintained, in good working condition, and properly stored.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Ability to pay close attention to detail when performing maintenance and repair tasks
  • Strong organizational skills to manage tasks, tools, and equipment effectively
  • Must be able to perform job responsibilities in a fast-paced environment
  • Good knowledge of tools, techniques, and terminology associated with the automotive mechanics’ trade
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical difficulties
  • Great interpersonal and communication skills
  • Good hand-eye coordination
  • Ability to work independently, as well as with a team
  • Must maintain a professional appearance and provide excellent customer service
  • Ability to read, interpret and transcribe data in order to maintain accurate records

Licenses/Certifications/Registrations:

Driving record should meet University underwriting guidelines to drive vehicle in performance of University business. Current underwriting guidelines include possession a valid driver’s license, issued in the United States; at least 21 years of age; at least three years of driving experience; maintain an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).

Physical:

Candidates must possess the necessary physical capabilities, with or without the assistance of mechanical devices, to safely perform job duties that require wearing a respirator and other personal protective equipment. These requirements include:

  • Lifting and carrying a minimum of fifty (50) pounds.
  • Climbing stairs, ladders and scaffolding, and working at heights above thirty (30) feet.
  • Pushing and pulling heavy equipment, machinery, or objects as needed
  • Performing tasks requiring bending, stooping, kneeling, and walking significant distances between and within buildings on campus.
  • Working in confined spaces.
  • Performing duties within extreme temperature ranges

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, between 7:00AM – 5:00PM (Subject to change to accommodate the needs of the University)

We are seeking candidates with a strong work ethic and a positive attitude, who are comfortable assisting in automotive maintenance and repair while engaging in effective communication and collaboration with staff and multiple departments at UAB.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

High School diploma or GED and one (1) year of Automotive Repair Knowledge and Mechanical Skills required.

Employees are expected to bring their own basic tools (e.g., wrenches, screwdrivers, etc.) upon hire. The department will supply specialized equipment and larger tools as necessary.
