Position Title: Special Education Personal Care Support Provider

Department: Special Programs

Reports To: Principal

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Summary:

Under occasional supervision, provides assistance to the special education teacher by providing one-to-one support for students with disabilities during the school day. This role is essential for ensuring that students with disabilities receive the care and support they need to succeed in their educational environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist students with daily activities such as feeding, dressing, grooming, toileting.
  • Instructional support: assist student in participating in classroom activities
  • Escorts students to and from various rooms in school building.
  • Feeding children: preparing food, blending, and follows special diet restrictions.
  • Notify teacher of tube feeding assistance (cleaning and caring for tubing and equipment).
  • Diapering: lifting, cleaning, applying ointment as needed, and disposing of soiled diapers by bagging appropriately. Clean changing surface.
  • Positioning: change positions a minimum of 3x daily, (double lifts only to prevent staff injury) proper use of equipment such as side lyers, standers and swings.
  • Inclusion: escort student to school activities /classes and assist student with activity and manage behavior.
  • Mobility: assist with mobility.
  • Loading and unloading buses: putting wheelchairs on the lifts and removing them safely.
  • Help in evacuating multiple wheelchairs as needed (i.e. Fire drills).
  • Laundry: keeping bibs, wash clothes, etc. washed and dried daily.
  • Sanitize class equipment and toys.
  • Dishes: washed and sterilize individual adapted cups, etc.
  • Assist the teacher by monitoring students to ensure their physical and environmental safety, and to maintain conduct and discipline
  • Provide instruction to the students as advised by the teacher.
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Education and/or Experience:

High School Diploma /GED or SC High School Credential. Experience in working with children with disabilities. Sincere interest in and desire to work with children.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

To assist the teacher in providing the safest atmosphere possible for students.

Language Skills

Ability to read a limited number of two and three syllable words and to recognized similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers. Ability to print and speak simple sentences.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to interpret and apply common sense understanding in carrying out instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form. Ability to analyze information and use logic to address work related issues and problems. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

Other Skills and Abilities:

Ability to work in a friendly manner with co-workers and students. Ability to read and understand directions. Ability to physically manage students and equipment. Be able to observe student behavior and advise teacher. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

Physical demands consist of frequently standing, talking or listening, walking or sitting for a period of time. The employee may occasionally push or lift up to 50 pounds; such as lifting to a changing table, pushing children on a bike or moving/rearranging furniture, etc. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and peripheral vision.

The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud. Duties are performed indoors as well as outdoors.

Level 102 Pay Scale

The terms of employment detailed in this job description are based on full time employment during an entire school year. Conditions of employment are adjusted for part time employees or individuals who are hired for less than an entire school year.

Evaluation:

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually according to Board Policy.
