Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Program Support Specialist (Career Counseling Part Time) for the Office for Students Affairs within the School of Public Health (SPH), located in Piscataway, NJ. Under direction of the Assistant Dean for Student Experiences & Alumni Affairs (SEAA), the Program Support Specialist (Career Counseling) is responsible for providing career advisement to enhance the academic and co-curricular experience of students and alumni at the Rutgers School of Public Health. Works with a high degree of autonomy and maintains communication with university/RBHS student services, the SEAA unit, and necessary faculty and staff within the school to ensure all efforts are student-centered.

Duties include:

  • Performs a wide range of career counseling, including individual and group career counseling to all certificate, MPH, MS, PhD, and DrPH graduate students, both in-person and virtually, on topics including resume/CV/cover letter reviews, job search strategy assistance, informational interviews, networking guidance, career assessments and transitions, interview practice and coaching, and salary/offer negotiation assistance.
  • Designs and implements small and large group workshops in the following critical areas: resume writing, job search, interviewing, and other professional areas relevant to Public Health.
  • Serves as primary contact for employer relations and recruitment, responsible for coordinating employer info sessions, onboarding employers to the career services/job board system, analyzing employer relations data, and establishing campus recruitment policies and procedures.
  • Recruit employer representatives, manages student/alumni registration, and coordinates all materials and staffing for annual School of Public Health Career Fair.
  • Serves as liaison with career services online management systems. Responsible for onboarding staff and students to career services online management systems that SPH uses.

Salary Details PS22S scale: salary will be prorated based on part-time status

Minimum Salary 60543.00

Mid Range Salary 72444.00

Maximum Salary 85865.00

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health, Counseling, Social Work, Student Affairs, or a related field, plus two (2) years’ related experience that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of career counseling theories and best practices for individuals and groups working the field of Public Health.
  • Equivalent education, experience and/or training may be substituted for the degree requirement.
  • Have a vehicle and valid driver’s license for travel between campuses.
  • Possess excellent interpersonal and computer skills.
  • Be able to work flexible hours, including outside of business hours.
  • Be able to work with the highest levels of university administration, as well as executives elsewhere in the publichealth sector.
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with local, state, national and international public health employers
  • Be attentive to the needs of the organization and contributions of co-workers, faculty and students.
  • Appreciate unique characteristics of different cultures and minority groups and respect individual differences.
  • Be a team-player, innovative and a self-starter with motivation to contribute to the overall goals of the university.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Public Health, Counseling, Social Work, or Student Affairs.
  • Previous experience in career counseling with public health and/or health-related program.
