Salary Range: $120,000 - $135,000

A variety of important factors are reviewed by HR when considering salary, including job duties, the applicant’s education and experience, all relevant internal equity considerations, department budget, and funding source.

Position Summary

The Office of University Counsel at Temple University seeks an experienced attorney to handle a wide array of matters, including but not limited to general business transactions, the review and completion of significant purchases and vendor contracts around the university, grant and government contracts, technology transfer, intellectual property matters, formation of legal entities and drafting and negotiating related documents, charitable giving and tax matters, and others. The position ensures Temple gets what is expected out of the transactions and limits future liabilities that can result from large and long-term contractual relationships. Consideration will be given to legal experience in higher education in other than transactional matters, such as litigation or regulatory affairs.

The Office of University Counsel provides legal counsel to the university, including all of its schools, departments and units on a diverse range of issues, including government contracts and grants, research, intellectual property, technology transfer, litigation, tax and non-profit law, higher education law, privacy, safety and environmental law, compliance, fundraising, investments, construction, real estate, international programs and relationships, and general business transactions.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Recent professional writing sample is required.

Required Education and Experience

  • JD from accredited law school, with high academic achievement.
  • Admission to at least one state bar, with ability to become licensed in Pennsylvania within one (1) year of notification of employment.
  • Three (3) or more years’ practice experience in handling a variety of business matters and/or related disputes.
  • List of representative business matters handled as primary, or lead counsel is required.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience providing advice and legal counsel at or to an institution of higher education.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Ability to draft, negotiate and review a wide variety of agreements including managing ongoing construction projects, focus on Temple's building plans, sustaining relationship with Office of Facilities Management, Project Delivery & Purchasing; grant and government contracts; provide other legal services and assistance to the University as assigned by University Counsel.
  • Provide other legal services and assistance to the University as assigned by University Counsel.
  • Advise administrative departments and academic units regarding business matters, intellectual property issues, and related disputes.
  • Counsel departments/units regarding review and interpretation of University policies and procedures.
  • Ability to conduct and develop training in areas of legal specialty.
