What You Will Do
Are you an experienced and driven Nondestructive Examination Quality Engineer looking to develop, maintain, and apply a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions? The Engineering Services - Operations (ES-OPS) Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a Quality Engineer to join our Institutional Nondestructive Examination (NDE) team. In this role you will be responsible for implementing the Nondestructive Examination Program at LANL. This position supports nuclear, accelerator, and non-nuclear facilities and programs across 38 square miles of the Laboratory.
This position will be filled at either the Quality Engineer 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Quality Engineer 3 ($101,700 - $168,200)
In this role you will serve as a Subject Matter Expert for the NDE program at LANL and will be responsible for aiding fellow laboratory personnel with implementing the NDE Program as required by national consensus codes and standards, recognized quality standards, Department of Energy (DOE) Orders, Laboratory requirements, and federal, state, and local regulations.
You will apply your expertise in Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) in support of procurement and evaluation of fitness-for-service for pressure vessels used for experiments at the LANL DARHT and LANSCE facilities and the Nevada National Security Site. Working cooperatively with technologists and technicians, you will perform PAUT, write procedures and techniques, develop scan plans, and mentor NDE personnel. You will engage in R&D programs related to additive manufacturing, complex forgings, and improved characterization of ultrasonically detected flaws.
Quality Engineer 4 ($122,300 - $206,300)
In addition to the duties described above, you will be expected to contribute to improvement of LANL's Engineering Standards, facilitate technical growth of the Institutional NDE Program, make visionary organizational contributions to improve NDE processes and applications, assist the Team Lead with work planning, staffing projects, and hiring.

Education/Experience at Quality Engineer 3: Position requires a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, QE or Industrial Systems Engineering or a related field and 8 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience.
Education/Experience at Quality Engineer 4: Position requires a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, QE or Industrial Systems Engineering or a related field and 12 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience.
Desired Qualifications:
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. Specific assignments may allow hybrid work. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular Position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Incentive Compensation Program: Position at the higher level is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
