Division/Program Summary Description: The mission of the Bureau of Tuberculosis Control (BTBC) is to prevent the spread of tuberculosis (TB) and eliminate it as a public health problem in New York City. The BTBC goals are: 1. To identify all individuals with suspected or confirmed TB disease and ensure their appropriate treatment, ideally on a regimen of directly observed therapy. 2. To ensure that individuals who are at high risk for progression from latent infection to active disease (e.g., contacts of active cases, immunocompromised individuals, recent immigrants from areas where TB is widespread) receive treatment for latent Infection and do not develop disease.

Position Summary: The BTBC Office of Epidemiology reviews and assesses exposures in residential and non-residential congregate settings; conducts investigations in these settings to identify, notify and evaluate contacts and assess transmission; analyzes genomic and epidemiologic information to detect, and investigate TB outbreaks; coordinates community- and provider-based outbreak response activities; and conducts data analysis and research to describe the epidemiology of TB in NYC and to inform TB prevention and control policy.

We are seeking an Outbreak Prevention and Response Coordinator to join our Epidemiology Office team. As an integral part of the unit, this person will coordinate TB prevention and outbreak response activities requiring engagement across the bureau, the Health Department, other City Agencies, the public, community health care providers, community-based organizations and other groups. Under general direction, with wide latitude for independent initiative and judgment, this individual will develop and operationalize tailored public health interventions to interrupt complex chains of transmission and will also help to implement TB detection and prevention activities in communities with high risk of TB and in response to emergent needs. The ideal candidate will be organized, have strong attention to detail, have experience with high level communication and coordination with diverse organization types, enjoy working with and serving the public, and thrive in a team environment.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement coordinated, multi-faceted, data-driven and culturally competent public health interventions to prevent and interrupt TB transmission, increase awareness of TB and TB risk, and address barriers to care in high risk-communities and in response to outbreaks.
  • Communicate and coordinate with leadership and management of healthcare facilities, community-based organizations, businesses, social service providers, City agencies, media outlets and others
  • Coordinate onsite TB testing events and related follow-up, including care coordination and referrals to public and community healthcare providers.
  • Coordinate with diverse stakeholders to develop and disseminate tailored health information to healthcare providers and the public.
  • Develop and support additional public health interventions as indicated to prevent and respond to ongoing transmission.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with City agency colleagues, community-based organizations, social service providers, healthcare providers, media liaisons, elected officials, and other partners.
  • Work with BTBC epidemiology staff to evaluate public health interventions as indicated.
  • Other duties as required.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience working with the public and communicating health information and recommendations to patients, the public, health care providers, and other entities.
  • Experience working with clinicians and/or other health care and social service providers.
  • Experience developing and disseminating health information to diverse populations.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Knowledge of the health care delivery system.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft suite (MS Word, Excel etc.) and Adobe Acrobat.

Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or

2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or

3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
