This position is for a Transportation Supervisor I within the Division 5 Traffic Unit in Durham County. In this position, you will supervise the activities of a signing crew and direct traffic signing operations in Wake and Franklin Counties. The position responsibilities include, but are not limited to: providing support and assistance to sign erectors, planning and adjusting work for crew, fabricating signs, maintaining inventory and inventory records, investigating public complaints/inquiries, planning and supervising the installation of emergency detours in accordance with NCDOT specifications, performing field inspections at worksites and facilities, assisting with safety meeting planning and administration, ensuring all equipment is properly maintained and serviced, coordinating activities with other work units, training, counseling and disciplining employees, maintaining work records, timesheets, job reports, conducting performance reviews, interviewing and recommending hiring new staff. You will perform various maintenance related activities including but not limited to posting of various regulatory ordinances (speed limits, no parking zones, etc.), installation of traffic warning signs, flagging, installing historical markers, repair/replacement of damaged/weathered signs, speed zones, vegetation removal. You will perform annual nighttime sign reviews for the condition of sign reflectivity and maintain proper documentation for use in developing an annual maintenance plan. The position will require knowledge of various computer systems, such as Microsoft Office, sign fabrication programs, MMS, and SAP. Your work may include special assignments outside of normal working hours. This position is subject to emergency call back, ability to work in emergency situations and inclement weather, scheduled night work and out of town travel during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Experience in Advanced Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practices
  • Experience in planning work and supervising a work crew.
  • Experience in record keeping, such as tracking employee and equipment time and recording quantities of materials used
  • Experience interpreting and applying NCDOT Standard Specifications along with other manuals related to traffic operations
  • Experience in the installation and maintenance of traffic control safety devices which includes highway signs, pavement markings, traffic signal systems and intelligent transportation systems (ITS) devices

Additional Expectations:

Visual acuity is required. Ability to read, write, understand, follow and act upon both verbal and written instructions. Ability to perform quantity calculations. Knowledge of report creation utilizing spreadsheets, databases, and other computer applications. Safety toe footwear is required. Must be able to work in extreme temperature conditions and walk and stand for long periods of time on uneven and sloping terrain and around high volumes of traffic. May be required to perform heavy lifting. Must promote a safe work environment. Ability to maintain working knowledge of all operating procedures. Ability to maintain effective working relations with other employees and the general public.

The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Class A Commercial Driver's License with N endorsement on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of an on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience. Experience must be related to functional area of the work that the position will supervise.
