SUMMARY

The Domestic Service Worker (DSW) performs a variety of tasks in the preparation, cooking and serving of meals, snacks and special functions in an institutional setting. The DSW must receive deliveries and put away supplies in a safe and organized manner. Other responsibilities include but are not limited to cleaning and sanitizing of the food service areas, including the kitchen, dining room, storeroom, service hallway and the laundry room. The DSW is also responsible for the sorting, washing, drying and folding of Youth Center laundry items. The safety of the kitchen and laundry operations is important. The DSW must be available to work weekends and holidays. This position requires flexibility. Assist each department as needed. Contribute to a positive work environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Food Service Department:

  • Daily preparation of meals and baking of foods.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to rotate shifts.
  • Must be available to work Holidays and Weekends.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50lbs., heavy food containers, trays, pots and pans containing hot foods and cartons of miscellaneous food and housekeeping items.
  • Maintain a high standard of safety in food handling.
  • Use the proper equipment in preparing and serving food.
  • Operate automatic dishwasher and other equipment.
  • Keep work area clean and orderly, removal of all waste and placing in the appropriate container i.e. trash to the dumpsters, recyclable to the recycling bins, grease to the drums.
  • Work in accordance with all regulations including but not limited to Public Health, School Breakfast, National School Lunch Program, Child and Adult Care Food Programs, USDA, PA DOA and PA PDE, PA DPW, US Food Code and all safety rules under OSHA.
  • Personal cleanliness and neat appearance are required.
  • Perform daily plasticware counts before and after each meal to ensure that all utensils are accounted for and in their proper place.
  • Receiving of deliveries and properly storing all items.
  • Complete and maintain all required paperwork and records in a legible and timely manner. Includes but not limited to Daily Log, Production Records, Discard Log, Time and Attendance Records, Vacation, Personal, Comp Time, Incident and Accident Reports.
  • Assist with other duties when required as needs arise to ensure a safe and orderly operation.
  • Laundry Department:
  • Sort incoming soiled laundry.
  • Load/Unload laundry from washers and dryers.
  • Fold all laundry items.
  • Label laundry items when required.
  • Notify supervisor of damaged or unusable clothing so that replacement can be issued.
  • Perform daily cleaning according to requirements.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Two (2) years’ experience working in the food service field.
  • ServeSafe Certificate required or must be obtained within 90 days of hire.
  • Must be able to work around and adapt to troubled teenagers in a secure facility.
  • Ability to maintain harmonious relationships with co-workers and other employees.
  • Must have good moral and ethical character; be flexible to work overtime in case of illness or vacation. Overtime is mandatory to ensure the proper staffing to provide for the needs of the residents.
  • Maintain proper security in the food service and laundry departments.
  • Must be physically fit to perform the above duties with the ability to work for extended periods under hot and humid conditions.
  • Preferably have experience in performing laundry and related duties.
  • Must obtain child abuse clearance, FBI and Pa. criminal history checks.
  • Must have a physical examination completed by a licensed physician.
  • Must submit to a drug screening exam prior to employment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; and talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands or arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision and depth perception.
